Twincam127 - 21/7/08 at 03:18 PM

Been looking at this site for quite a while and you lot know so much I dared to post this as my first post and it not even remotely about cars….

I expect I will be mocked

I could say it was for a friend but it isn’t. I was just wondering if anyone had had any experience with dating agencies and the like, I only work with blokes and do nightshift so chances are slim to say the least. Don’t laugh it aint funny…..well a bit maybe anyway can any of you help a sad git like me life is passing me by

Thanks, the sad git.

eznfrank - 21/7/08 at 03:22 PM

Not me personally (married and all that) but quite a few of my mates (and my dad!!) have used dating agencies.

I think there's a lot of people in your position who don't have time to spend weeks figuring out they have zip all in common with someone. I think the major benefit is that at least you get someone who has something (ish) in common with you.

My mates who use them have had a few girlfriends out of them and one is actually due to be married to someone he met via an agency. The other tends to just "doink them" as he puts it but they don't seem to mind too much

nib1980 - 21/7/08 at 03:22 PM

one of the guys I work with (NO really), used one and he's happily living with his "find" now.

sounds a bit hit and miss to me but what is there to lose?

Interesting my ex who got married after splitting up with me (poot girl she was devastated) hase recently split up with hubby.
She's on a couple of dating sites up north, apparantly they are quite prevalend for the quick doink as someone put it!
Her ex hubby is doing the same and has various encounters...

Sounds like fun but I'm married, go one enjoy the fun until you find one that snares you!

M

Jasper - 21/7/08 at 03:34 PM

My sister recently married a chap (15 years younger!!!) she met online dating - and before that had lots of fun meeting people.

And the woman who works for me met a chap she's now been seeing for 2 years - can't remember which site but I can find out if you want.

Go for it, lifes MUCH too short not to be having as much fun as possible.

Thanks thats more the kind of advice I am after

I should mention I’m 38 and would rather settle down than fool around. Does anyone dare to admit they know of good sites?

Mr Whippy you are greedy

You're right there - the selfish bugger still hasnt produced a photo as evidence that these babes exist!!

D Beddows - 21/7/08 at 03:48 PM

I met the current Mrs Beddows via the medium of internet dating (long story which involves alcohol ) - we would never have met any other way as we'd never have gone to the same places - which would have been a shame as we've been married for nearly 2 years now and are very happy ......nothing wrong with single mothers btw Mr Whippy!

Bit wary of this thread as it's a bizaar 1st post BUT I'm not ashamed of how we met and it's amazing once you mention how you met how many other couples 'come out of the closet' so to speak

nick205 - 21/7/08 at 03:57 PM

One of my oldest friends married his first internet date last year after a 6 month romance - going well so far.

I suspect he might have been after a few "doink" encounters first though

Mr Whippy - 21/7/08 at 03:59 PM

wow even just typing 'dating' in to google brings up masses of sites! Can see the point if you'd rather not waste valuable time and money doing the usual thing, which seems rather miss than hit TBH. Most girls you come across at nights out are usually stinking drunk and more likely to just throw up all over you

note : when I say 'You' I mean me, I'm Scottish and so talk in a daft and confusing way or so I'm told by my foreign co-workers

Yeah yeah so you are trying to tell us you only just google'd it then Mr W??

bimbleuk - 21/7/08 at 04:34 PM

Here's three different senarios. First mate uses dating sites and seems to have a new girlfriend everytime I see. Hes very confident and out going but seems to attract some nutters on occasion. His only let down is his dental hygiene which may contribute to a lot of first dates!

Second mate is single and definitely after some adventures before settling down so uses the sex date sites.

Third mate again confident professional type used a dating service and married his second date. She was another busy professional with minimal time as she had a succesful business to run. They recenty bought a large farm plot in Devon and have had their first child this year.

So swings n round-a-bouts really and there's probably a dating site for everyones taste! Hardest thing might be finding a reputable dating service as there's so many now.

JoelP - 21/7/08 at 05:10 PM

this thread rocks

martinq357 - 21/7/08 at 05:44 PM

Go for it, they work.

Been together for 9 years, married for 7.

I was in similar situation, all blokes, shift work, most friends married.

I used Dateline in the pre 'net days, the first phone call was the worst.....

snapper - 21/7/08 at 06:36 PM

Build a kit car , you wont have the time or the money to worry about girls, if you did have the time or the money you wouldn't have the conversation cos you would only talk about car building

Twincam127 - 21/7/08 at 07:53 PM

Thanks for all the help, I think now know what to do

scotlad - 21/7/08 at 08:00 PM

I just married a girl i met through a dating agency 2 months ago. Joining was one of the best things i ever did- go for it- you've nothing to lose.......

Trust me, getting married need not stop you. I have 3 1/2 cars at the moment. 3 actually cars and one good but terminally rusty Alfa. Although it does piss the wife off a bit from time to time.

quite right, I now of one guy who has 2 kids and a wife, yet has over 30 cars!

anyway...

I'm quite impressed, didn't think they worked but obviously they do. I hated asking girls out, I may be a loud mouth on here but normally I'm actually quite quiet (no seriously), utterly dreaded asking anyone out in a date, probably cos of the massive failure rate, oh and never ever ask some one at work, if they say no it couldn’t be more awkward

Good luck with the searching, one other good use of the web…

Aboardman - 21/7/08 at 09:12 PM

i have had my profile logged into datingdirect and match for the last hour whilst I watched tv and not one person viewed my profile in that time.

advantage of datingdirect over match tou can see the people who view your profile and emailed you before you pay your money.

An hour? you’re being a wee bit optimistic there, a couple of days yes, did you post a picture?

D Beddows - 22/7/08 at 08:03 AM

lol - a whole hour! If I recall (and it was a while ago!!) there is a bit of an art to what you put in your profile otherwise you get no replies at all. Having said that you also get the same amount of knock backs as you do with any other method of meeting the opposite sex so it's best to treat it as a bit of a laugh - people can spot desperate a mile off btw! - and if it works out, as it obviously has for several of us, great otherwise you've not really lost anything and nothing ventured nothing gained.......

You will come across (possibly not the best choice of words there lol) some seriously odd people as well as some very nice ones btw.......
