What could be the cause?
Without a few more specifics to go on, I would say something broken or wearing out or loose

What else do you want to know?
It only does it in reverse. Cant be sure where it is coming from but think transmission tunnel
type of car?
Sorry, should have started with that
Its on my midget so front engine, rwd
I would guess worn or sloppy engine/gearbox/axle mounts causing the gearbox/axle to knock on the body somewhere or maybe if it's the gearbox a
missing tooth off reverse gear?
Cheers
Mark
OK, I'll bite...
Put a bike engine in it. That'll stop it knocking in reverse!

Its proberably the back axle tramping as you go backwards...
Tends to happen in older cars as the springs/dampers wear out...apparently
Knee on the centre console?!

Aw I was gonna suggest that.

The time that someone uses something Mr Whippy says on this forum, for a side winning argument is the time to pack up and go home!!!
