Roller Shutter Removal
carpmart - 30/7/08 at 09:50 AM

Hi Chaps

Has anyone any experience with Industrial roller shutter doors? Its this one...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=230273040378&ssPageName=STRK:MEAFB:IT

I have to remove this one tomorrow and was wondering a few things.

1. Whats the best way to approach this and how many pieces can I break it down into?
2. How heavy are they? Will three men be able to manage the weight?
3. What tools will I need?

Any tips/experience greatly appreciated.

Regards

Harvey

the ones I have dealt with have the roller assembly working like a roller blind.

The blind goes down a track at either side of the door.

therefore I would expect it to be broken down into the roller assebly ( heavy and awkward to get down up high ect ect ) and the 2 tracks.

2 of us put 1 up using scafolding hard work but reasnabally safe. we did the second of Ladders I will not be doing this agian !!!!).

the frame is 3 sided box, remove the covering piece, make sure the shutter is rolled up before you remove it first.they are heavy,or do what i did, drive a fork lift truck through it

I have worked on large industrial type roller doors and if you can remove the side guides, the door can be slid apart. The sections just slot together sideways if that makes any sense?
On a smaller roller door I was taking apart, I took the side guides off, unrolled the door a bit and fastened it above the roller mechanism and then used to door to winch itself down!!!

Dont do what a guy did in a factory i once worked at. Truck damaged the door so that if it was opened too high it jammed. He went up on fork lift truck, no harness. Stepped back, fell off and killed him.

Many moons ago I was talking to a sprinkler system designer about factory fire precautions, specifically what to do if the place catches fire and the Fire Brigade want to get through a high-security roller shutter door.

Basically, the firemen fasten a big chain between the door and the back of a fire engine, then drive away to rip the door out of the opening. Those fire trucks have a lot of hauling power...

So, have you got access to a big heavy truck and a length of chain?

Depending on the size and type of guides, on small ones remove the front of the guide and slide the laths out for ease of transport.
then lift the barrel out of the end cups and then remove the guides from the wall.
If you look on any of the roller shutter manufactures web site you can see how theses are assembled.

WARNING : If it is a manual shutter you need to take the tension off first or it will cause some harm and damage.

cant actual see the item you are talking about as ebay baned from work, is it purly manual operation eg its raising is not spring assisted? if spring/mechanically assisted be very carefull in releasing the spring and stored energy!
