polishing to a shine

not car related, but in fact kitchen worktops! The corian style ones are essentially MDF with about 8mm of plasic on the top, you bond them up and then sand it off. Ive been down to 400 grit wet and dry, its smooth but not shiney. What sort of stuff can i use to buff it to perfection?! Does stuff like t-cut have colours in it? Just need a fine polish paste.

1200 grit then polishing compound?

JoelP - 20/8/08 at 05:56 PM

what sort of place sells it?

blakep82 - 20/8/08 at 05:58 PM

i'm pretty sure you get 1200 grit wet and dry from halfords (ie, i'm sure i've bought some from there...)
as for polishing compound, you get that there too, but not sure if its safe for plastic....

If you have a paint supplier nearby they will have all the gear & be able to advise what sort of grade compound will work best.

Farecla G3 then G7, only use paper if you need to get rid of any scratching

Danozeman - 20/8/08 at 06:32 PM

Il go for 1200 grit G3 then G7 just to finish it off.

I've used 2000 grit paper on gelcoat and paint. gives an unbelievably smooth but disappointingly mat finish. Polishing compound and a mop is the only way to go. I think it takes more patience that I used too.

Toothpaste. Every time

Very fine polishing action, cheap and widely available...

and you get a minty fresh kitchen worktop too!!!

adam1985 - 20/8/08 at 07:31 PM

when i used to fit fireplaces we used to use normal car polish not t cut on the resin ones sure these worktops are made of the same stuff

the best shine I ever got was using Brasso its like using 1200 in a liquid form

Defo try the Ferecla products. i always have G3 and G10 in the garage. Not sure what the differences are between G7 and G10 but there website is very good.

All decent trade motor factors and bodyshop supplies places sell it. If you want to cover the kitchen in it hire a polishing tool and use the correct Ferecla mops.
