I may need to get a car from Birmingham back to norfolk which is overdue its MOT test and out of tax.

I know you can drive an untaxed vehicle to an MOT test, but whats the consensus on driving 120miles???

Then I will obviously get the tax sorted with MOT cert in hand...

you'd struggle to convince any copper that you HAVE to get a MOT done 120 miles away...

If the testing station is near your home there shouldn't be a problem, i wouldn't bother me.

I think the MOT station has to be preety near to where you are. I certainly dont think they would let you off doing 120 miles.

Suspect that may be seen as taking the pee.

There is no maximum distance specified in Law. If the MOT test is pre-booked then it could be 500 miles away and you would still be legal.

you're a copper and someone is doing what you've just written. How would you react? You've pulled them for a reason would you just go "ok, off you go" or would you then take a VERY close look at the car to see if their is anything wrong with it?

If you think the car is safe to drive 150 miles, why not MOT it in brum as it will obviously pass, taxi to local post office, tax it and drive home legally.

Obviously if you don't think it will pass ........ why are you risking killing me in your unsafe vehicle.

I looked at importing a car from Holland. I was going to book an MOT in Harwich so i'd drive off the ferry and drive a couple of miles to an MOT garage. Get it sorted, tax it and drive home.

i think you'd struggle to convince a copper why you need to drive 120 miles to get an MOT, when there's a test centre in just about every town.

all you need to do is have a police car near you and it'll pick you up on ANPR

You can legally drive a car (no T&T) to a place of MOT via the shortest poss route to the nearest MOT station.

At least thats what i tell our customers.
If u do make sure that u give the MOT station your reg and mobile numbers because more favors for you if u do get pulled!

get a business card from the test centre in question and keep it with you in the event of a pull the copper can use the card to confirm its booked in,one of my lads drove a car back from kent and got tugged on the m25 the copper rang me to confirm it was booked in and that was it

The law simply states :

'You can drive your vehicle to and from a pre-arranged test at an MOT test station provided you have adequate insurance cover in place for the use of that vehicle.'

There are no restrictions on distance as you are free to choose where and who repairs/MoTs your vehicle.
