A good driving present?
cadebytiger - 27/8/08 at 09:09 AM

I am just about to finish 4 years of PhD (I hope!) and I was wondering what to get my tutor as a thank you. She has been amazing and really gone out of her way to help. I thought a nice personal present might be some kind of driving experience as I don't think she will ever have done anything like that before. Has anyone got any ideas or recommendations. The problem will almost certainly be money as I am a poor as a man who has spent all his life as a student!

Thanks guys

Rupert

You should put in your profile where you are located. Will help with suggestions. I did a single seater driving experience at Silverstone which was fun but having looked at the options, i wish my missus had gone for the single seaters at Rockingham instead

Is there any chance of her getting in any trouble accepting a gift from a student, that aside a mate of mine did a 1/2 day rally experiance, said it were good, how about a hot air balloon ride

I would find out (subtlely...) if she would really appreciatea dirving experience. My SWMBO got me a Audi TT + single seater experience at Brands for a birthday, which I really enjoyed, but there were a couple of women there too: one was really up for it, the other was disappointed that her boyf/hubby hadn't got a day spa ticket, and she wimped out after the Audis and never got in the single seater.

Not saying your tutor wouldn't like a driving day, just she might not...

Edit: also, I would not say anything until after you get your PhD result, just to avoid any possible "bribery" issues

P.S. good luck

I was going to suggest there might be some kind of student / teacher fixation going on but didnt........... but now you've started it.....................

HAHA - think she would be the kind to like the driving and not any probs with the bribary as she will not be the one examining the thesis ... hmm maybe i should get them something!!

I can assure you our relationship is strictly professional. lol

thanks for the help

Is that for her to wear whilst out on the track - might find the harness straps will chafe a bit on bare skin

If cash is tight then a passenger ride might be good unless she is already an experienced track driver. I had a ride out at Croft some time ago in their Ginetta and it was fantastic. Didnt last long but a great experience.

How about a flying lesson? I did a Half hour one for a pressie a few years back and it was really good. was a red letter day one and about £50 i think, which i thought was quite good value.

some places do a 50 quid 'gift' experience, you get to pick what you want from a selection. friends got me one, no idea what i'll do but it includes pampering, hot air balloon or rally car drive.
