Spend it quick, it'll be worthless in 10mins

Mr Whippy - 2/10/08 at 12:45 PM

it would be quite funny if that currency suddenly (admittedly rather unlikely) gained in valuable against the US dollar, Africa could end up buying the entire planet.

When we handed Zimbabwe to Mugabe, the Zim dollar was 1:1 with the USD.... How times change!

mcerd1 - 2/10/08 at 12:51 PM

are they still printing both sides ?

in germany (1929) it got so bad that they stopped printing the backs to save time before they were worthless - I think eventually they were worth more as paper than what was printed on them

Just looked up on an exchange rate site - now the Zimbabwe Dollar is worth £0.004, so

50,000,000 ZWD = 200,000 GBP

But you might have trouble shifting it in your local bank!

I suspect that there's an international exchange rate, which is far away from the 'what will this piece of paper buy in Zimbabwe' rate.

That's because it was devalued a couple of months back so that 10 billion 'old' dollars became 1 'new' dollar. The notes above are the old ones and 100 billion was probably worth about 1p or something.

A South African friend of mine went to Zimbabwe last year, taking with him an old $5 Zimbabwe note. He gave it to a petrol station attendant who just giggled. He was then asked "Can I take this home to my son? He doesn't believe that Zimbabwian money ever came in units less than $1,000,000.

On the other hand, Zimbabwe is the richest country on Earth by one key measure, the proportion of the population who are millionaires.

blakep82 - 2/10/08 at 01:44 PM

but could the exchange rate pick up in years to come?
i always wondered if this could be a cheap and low risk (lorisk? lol) er, 'investment'?

Guinness - 2/10/08 at 02:35 PM

I went to Poland back in the early 90's and they had a similar problem with the Zlot. When we approached the border point there was a little old lady sitting outside selling baskets, and I didn't think twice.

We went inside, changed £300 for Zlots, and the exchange rate was 16,000:1 so we walked out with 4.8 million zlots! Our first purchase was a basket to carry the cash round in!

The petrol stations just had stencilled zeros after the counter!

We've still got some of the Zlots, which we use when playing Monopoly! It's much more satisfying playing Monopoly for real money!

Wonder if they have the equivalent of 'Pound' shops in Zimbabwe: '$100 million dollar' shop doesn't quite have the same catchy ring to it!
