As title really, xmas is looming, do we get our 4 year old a PSP or a DS ???

DS seems to have better suited games for his age but not being a console player (if i had time to do that, my car would be built by now !), i have no idea which one would be best to get him.

He's currently getting on well with a gameboy micro so just thinking of upgrading it for him. Not worried about watching films on it, purely for games like 'Cars' - 'Wall E' - 'Simpsons' etc.

Bear in mind i know nothing at all about these things - i need enlightening...

Mind you, the homebrew bit sounds very interesting, what with the credit crunch

Thats why i know nothing about these, we have a huge selection of books and board games but do a lot of travelling and that is when he uses it, i could really do with some help on this.

The gameboy micro has improved his hand eye co-ordination no end & i see nothing wrong with consoles because my kids will not be allowed to spend their entire lives on them, everything in moderation i think.

well i know its very easy to download games from the tinternet for the ds, so that makes it cheaper

Im not sure i would like him playing with a football in the car and there's definately not room for a swing or a slide in the landrover ?? strange answers ?

Great stuff, looks like the ds is the one to go for, don't really fancy the shooting folk bit, he watched a snippet of power rangers the other day and seemed to turn into a mini Bruce Lee !! problem was, he is at that great height where he hits you right in the wrong place ..... Bless

obviously its down to what games you buy him for it, but i think you may have a better selection with a DS

Risking being controversial here but I'd say a Gameboy Advance SP for a 4 year old....

If you're set on DS vs PSP then DS wins everytime for a kid under 11....

have a dig about on the net though as i believe there is a new improved version on its way, not sure whats changed or if its of any interest but if not it may make the old version cheaper.

DS, PSP is disc not card based which makes the games load slower and is less robust.

Games are much better suited to kids unless you want to teach them how to kill in large volumes.

Mine have:
New Super Mario Bros
Logo Star Wars

Mario is probably better for a 4 year old, my 5 year old has no problems.

Super Monkey Ball is also supposed to be good for younger kids.

My kids also love books, art materials and lego which see to other aspects of their development.

Edit to say: There is a new DS coming out soon which includes a music player and camera. I suspect they'll keep the supply limited for Christmas as always, but it might be worth waiting or using it to get money off the old model.

Not having had a PSP I can't compare but my 4 year old loves his DS.

He's a real whizz on Mario Kart and can beat kids more than twice his age who get him to complete the difficult races

Next step.........Locost racing!

Ive had a PSP. As a result will be buying my 6 year old a DS for xmas. The PSP is fantastic, but as said before i dont consider it easy enough to use for under 11's. Games etc seem to be more plentiful on the DS for younger kids.

We have both here. The DS's gets used all the time by the 6 and 15 year olds and the PSP sits in the drawer! Get an NDS TT card or similar and you can download and play all the games they will ever need. Also got some multi-game cartridges in Thailand which have around 100 games for around £25-£30.

Seems to be the best option, its good to get other people's experience/input before shelling out

Will take advice though, and wait until nearer xmas, might get a bargain then.

P.s, As mentioned before in this post, we encourage board games, reading, painting piccy's, glueing & sticking (i love it ), playing outside, bike riding, conker collecting, dog walking, jumping in puddles (my favourite), brio track building, cake making, hamster looking aftering, goldfish taking care of-ing, swimming, sea fishing, horse riding..............all the above are quite difficult in the back of a landrover, maybe not impossible but definately difficult ! so a DS it is

Wow, just writing that makes me realise why i still have no wheels on my chassis, we both have to go to work too full time too !
