In my garage i have a 60 watt (i think) energy saving light bulb.
This doesnt put out much light (read i want more ). What other options do i have for more light?

I've got four 6' long flourescent tubes in my garage.

It's brighter than a very very bright thing

yes, flourescent lamps - I got mine from screwfix. there are 2 5 or 6 footers in the garage - plenty enough for me.

you could attach them to the ceiling and plug into the lamp fitting.

... before some smart &rse says that McDougalls have stopped making flourescent lamps, ofcourse I meant fluorescent!!

Ive got 6x 8' tubes in mine... just like working in daylight

only problem with them is replacing the huge things... especially trying to fit the replacement tubes in a car without damaging them

Flourescents are the way, but don't like the cold, there are ones with cold start ballast meant for outdoor lighting which work very well in the cold. Regular ones have a tendency to flash while warming up, very distracting. I have 6 double 8 footers, and 2 double 4 footers, 20' X 30' shop.

Paint the walls white with cheapo emulsion paint. It will help reflect the light back into the room.

Even a little makes a big difference. Also if helps keep the dust down by sealing the walls.

Cheap 5ft fluorescent fittings from B&Q or Screwfix??

You cant have too much light when working on your car.


EDIT:
I have 2 x 5ft singles and a 5ft double in a 6 x 4 metre garage. Its not really enough!!
two rows of 3 x 5ft singles about 1.2 metres in from the sides would be better.

I also have a wander lead inspection lamp as well (very useful for underneath the car)

I have 4 6 ft striplights and 1 4 ft over the bench. Lovely light. Im currently painting the walls white too.

These can all be wired off your fitting.

i painted the walls white and 2x 6" strip lights ok for me, and if i need extra light i point a 500w halogent light at the roof to reflect the light back

one tip is don't put the tubes in the middle, have them at he edge of the ceiling and they will light the sides of the car as well as the top

I just have daylight, but then i have to work outside....

I have a couple of the 6ft tubes but bought 4 small outdoor halogen security lights

150w £8ea B&Q got 2 screwed to the ceiling wired into a plug and point nicely at the engine bay of the car in the garage.

The other 2 I'll probably put onto a stand to move about as and when necessary.

I have 4 halogens.

They fair chuck a bit of light out.

Cost about two bob each from screwfix.

I have a couple of fluorescents, plus a pair of 500W halogens on a stand when I REALLY need some extra light... looks like the sun's out when that's on! Nice and cosy too - plenty of radiant heat...

24'x11' garage with four 6' double flourescents plus a four footer over the bench.............
And.a 500w mobile floodlight.

And I still make the wife feel guilty about the tumble dryer
