
and suggestions for increasing the utterly rubbish performance of our escort 75 non turbo??
it will soon be my daily driver but i need to be able to do more than 65mph unladen

i wondered if theres anything basic i can do as the last one we had went well but this one is utterly useless

If it's a diesel, a fuel and air filter change, then rag it in the lower gears for a few miles to blow the crap out.
If it's a none-common-rail a half pint of ATF in the tank is meant to be a decent diesel injector cleaner...
N/A diesels aren't balls of fire to start with, after umpteen thousand miles of "white van man" driving, they don't get any

If its never been thrashed fom new you have no chance. Them things are gutless as hell.
As said an air and fuel filter might make it go a little better. Thrash it for a bit and clear the crap out. Also check the pump timing half a tooth
out and theyl be gutless. Wind the throttle stop out on the pump a bit aswell.

Well I am the proud owner of a astra van non turbo and its pretty gutless, (will do 80+mph tho)
I am currently trying to blow the engine up by thrashing it so i can persuade my boss/father to put a turbo version of the engine in it.
Would like to get some more performance out of it but would like to keep the fuel economy which i suspect is a non starter.
I think if you up the fuel pressure then that will provide a bit more umph but the best option is as mentioned get the turbo engine in!

The TD version of the engine could be fitted, but as always there are numerous small differences that make the transplant more difficult. The exhaust
is different for starters, and you probably want to avoid anything that came with the PATS immobiliser as it will cause you no end of grief. If you
get the more powerfull version with the intercooler, you will have bonnet clearance problems, and the intercooler won't be doing much unless you
cut some vents in the bonnet.
After all this your insurance company may not be very happy since the van is now essentially modified.
Sell the van and buying a TD version would be a lot less hassle. Personally I'd avoid the escort diesels altogether since they were thoroughly
horrible engines in most respects. Get yourself an Astra van with the lovely little Isuzu engine.

i did an engine swap on a mk3 astravan i had from gm turbo diesel to the isuzu turbo diesel what a total PITA
i think we've pretty much decided to get rid now so ill treat myself to either a caddy or a transit connect depending on how much spare change i
have at the time

The izuzu and gm engine are pretty different so can believe it would be difficult to change!
My non turbo engine is a GM engine and its still running well despite my best efforts.
the van was originally a turbo model so i think in my case it would be relatively easy to change back, the exhaust needs changing anyway!
hmmm might go abit easier on the engine, can't really afford to let it go right now!
35mpg is really bad. i get at least 50mpg from the astra
