Strange tyre wear
trogdor - 28/10/08 at 07:26 PM

Hi, I have just replaced the front tyres on my audi 80, it had strange wear in that the outer edges of the tread had worn smooth but the rest was still ok.

I assumed that it was due to the tracking so I got the checked and it was not very far off so while it has been adjusted I doubt that caused the problem.

So.... any ideas why the tyres might wear quicker on the outside edges?

many thanks

Enthusiastic cornering? Slightly low pressures and lots of cornering causing the tyre to roll more than usual?

Underinflation

My mini ones die on the outside edges first becasue they are low profile runflats, very stiff sidewalls...

Either that or you are throwing it around roundabouts too much.

If I had a pound for every under inflated tyre that I see I'd be a rich man.

Just over inflate them and let the middle catch up!

power steeringis also known culprit

Audi 80 has all of the engine forward of the front axle and it's mounted longitudinally.

In many cases it's plenty heavy too.

It's sort of asking to understeer.

They're marvelous cars though.
Great things.

It's another 'why did I flog it' car for me.

Tracking done.
But does that include camber??

Sounds like underinflation to me....

And Dunlop Agrees

underinflation here too.

cool well thats what i thought after thinking about it last night, although i would of thought it would wear on both outside edges?

my wife drives the car so no need to worry about going round roundabouts although i will be on the insurance soon! But will be careful as it is our baby.

The audi doesn't have power steering, its good for the biceps!

Wife does struggle with it sometimes but it is fun to see peeps expressions when you say its only manual steering.

hmmm looking at that link from dunlop the tyres when they worn we most like the camber wear photo. I didn't go to the place with my wife to get the tracking done so have no idea if they checked and adjusted camber. They said the suspension was fine.

Will give them a call today and see. How would i get the camber checked and adjusted? Is it easy to do on a 80?

Almost every car I have owned has worn the outside edges of the tyres before the rest, despite having tracking checked. I put it down to driving style...

balls, have spoke to the place that did the tracking, they only did the toe in/toe out. not the camber so i think i will need to get it measured and adjusted, is it even possible to adjust? I can't see how you can without adjustable top mounts.
