need to make a bogie to run 40 miles on fairly level railway track. Only slowly and quietly ideally. Maybe 20mph tops.
I think there is no way to avoid a proper engine, since pedalling isnt ideal. So maybe a rev and go moped sort of thing. A friend suggests a lawn
mower engine, but that seems a bit uncivilised.
I would suggest a monkey bike engine but that would be very noisy!
Any suggestions on power source, maybe with transmission ideas too?

im not sure what its moving yet, between one and 4 people. Depends how we work it, if it one each or one to share. Its for a bit of fun we have planned, though i think we're a year off completion at best.

ah cool, so its like one of these challenge things. like on scrapheap challenge (?) when they made something like this?
maybe a sidecar type thing, motorbike/scooter with no tyres, a wide frame on the side to make a sidecar for the passengers?
Why not fit a jet engine or two....
Either a Turbojet engine.... Or a turboshaft engine driving the wheels...
You need an old rover gas turbine generator set... use that to drive ur wheels.... would be good for around 10hp :p
What about a bike engine if you don't need reverse.. 
More seriously - what about building one of these:

Silent and zero-emissions. And not a pedal in sight!
How about a train to pull or push it? Proven technology that has been around for over a century, why reinvent the wheel?
Or one of those hand cart things you see in black and white westerns?
Solar panels and electric motor, load of torque at low speed, tis what the trains use.
Will it be for a main line? Maybe some flashing lights and air bags would be a good idea.
How quiet does it need to be? Could electrics be the answer.
Something like an old Honda C70/C90 will provide a very robust little 4 stroke and 3 speed transmission with centrifugal clutch, and if you can use the original exhaust they are pretty quiet.
Perhaps you could build something like this (it's a track supervisor's rail-car from Indian Railways).
It looks suspiciously like assorted bike bits linked to a solid axle with a chain drive.
Doesn't look too hard for a Locost builder to make!

Don't forget that you won't need a diff - the wheel profile takes care of that problem.
40 miles is quite a long way!
