Sloooooooooow Laptop
Just spent a weekend with my new girl! So am happy!
However she has a fairly new asus laptop around 1.6Ghz with 1Gb ram etc.
Which should be quick as my dell is a similar spec and runs quickly etc.
the asus is soooooo slow it was like going back 10 years.
Now it is running VISTA and there seemed to be a lot of applications running (about 100) and 80% of RAM used most of the time.
Any thoughts on how to sort it out. Advice of install XP even though sensible is not the answer I'm looking for.
Thanks in advance

my dell running vista has about 55 processes running and it runs fine
not really quick but fast enough. So 100 is deffo too many, not sure what you would do to get rid of the ones you don't need.
my ram usage is about 71% at the mo so i guess 80% isn't so bad.

I wouldnt worry about the ram usage in vista as it has a totally different way of managing RAM which involves it loading stuff into memory it thinks
you may use then unloads them as you need the extra ram

I had 2 new dell laptops which ran like dogs with vista, when I had a hard drive failure on one and reinstalled it on the new drive it ran like a
dream.
I guess that by reinstalling myself i left out a lot of bloatware or something
i have done this twice with the same improvement both times. The difference was staggering, stable and fast.

any idea which model it is ? (if its like my old thing it'll be writen on the bottom)
I've always liked the asus stuff - my old AthlonM 1400+ (1.2GHz) runs just as fast and as well now as it did 6 years ago (on XP of course)
I've reinstalled it a couple of times, once for a virus and once for a bigger HD - reinstalling them always helps speed them up if they've
been filled with rubbish
my brothers brand new toshiba (centrino duo I think ?) has vista and seems almost as slow as my old thing somethimes, but once an aplications running
its much faster in that aplication it just takes forever to open things

Trying to impress!
Its good I've managed to go from Wife Mk1
back to Girlfriend Mk1.1
I have noticed a big increase in performance.
Some stay the old installations are best!
So should I reinstall vista.
The laptop has a built in webcam and is about 1 year old, not sure of model but probably about £400 when new.
Is Vista easy to install, done loads of xp but never vista.
The wireless is also awful, it doesnt get any reception out of the living room, not that there is a need to get a laptop working in other rooms!!!

My old copy of GF 1.0 always ran like a dream too. Much cheaper and more stable than the Wife 2.0 I now run - much, much more resource hungry and
suffers the occasional Blue Screen moments too

if you find the model - have a look on asus's support site
they have drivers for most OS's, and even if you stick with vista there could be some more upto date stuff

Vista is a nightmare for resource usage, if it only has 1gb ram it will struggle, always go for min 2 GB ram.
Look to see what runs at startup, Adobe speed loader and stuff do not really need to load at startup.
the other thing to look for is any installed programs, look in control panel and installed software. remove anything that says redirector.
also Antivirus will generally kill the machine especially if you have somthing like norton AV ( with firewall and ant spam and AV all combined )
go for the basic AGV AV ( free one ) without any other firewall or anything.
for Spayware use Spybot Search and destroy.

1Gb Vista might not be fun.
Up to you.
Personally I'd ditch Vista and roll back to XP!!
Otherwise use task manager to check what processes are causing it to run @ 80% CPUsage.
Try starting up in safe mode and see if the same problem occurs (bet it doesn't!!). Only trouble will be trying to find out what part of the
chronic bloating is causing the problem.

Vista really needs a lot of memory to run properly however --
(1) By any chance as it got Norton as its antivirus/security program ? if so dump it and load something that takes less resources such as a Avria
Premium.
The latest MacAfee Anti-Virus is also report as a processor hog.
(2) Turn off most of the Vista special effects.
(3) Download and install/run "Hijackthis" this will let you see all and let you disable the unwanted stuff that Dell have installed on
top of the standard windows install.

I've been looking at ram over the last week both for my PC and for my G/F's laptop. Looking today I've seen in many places that you
really want at least 2 gb ram for running vista smoothly.
Check what ram you need on Crucial.com and buy it from www.ebuyer.com
I've just ordered 2Gb ram for her laptop which cost less than £25. Should make a nice difference seeing as its currently running 256mb.
