What age is it mate?? Theyr not to bad to change iirc.
Whats wrong with the engine?
If its the 1.3 jtd the same as the vauxhall 1.3 cdti. It might have just jumped the cam chain as the tensioners stick in. 8 time sout of ten you can put a new chain and tensioner in it retime it and itl be ok..

2006? That outta have been covered under warranty!!! Must have been run low on oil. Ive not known one of them engines to get smokey! Well not in a combo anyway. They get through oil like anything when theyr new.

Theyr not to bad to fit an engine in. Theyr the same unit as the vauxhall 1.3 cdti's. U just need the engine code.

Iv seen a few smokey 1.3 combo's
Why do you want the 1.9? The 1.3 is almost as powerful but more economical. We have 1.9 doblo freezer vans and they are a bit too powerful for round town driving.

How long can i resist the temptation to drop a V8 in?

The 1.3's are pretty good. As soon as you start messing around putting different sized engines in you'll start suffering with insurance problems as your van is modified.
