Morning Terry.
Sadly a Golf "Feature". Didn't happen on mine but is far too common sadly.
First you'll need the door open. Open it from the inside. In the door face that meets with the body of the car you'll see a black grommet.
Carefully prize this off and you'll see a torx head underneath. This is the bolt that holds the handle to the door.
You need to detatch the handle and adjust the clip - if not reattach the clip. I'm guessing your handle pulls and moves but the door fails to
open?
In these pictures on VW Vortex you'll need 17 to 23. You'll see the clip is referred to as tab in the photos - same thing.
When I removed the locks on my Golfy the torx in the door shut which holds on the handle can SO EASILY be wound out too far and drop into the door
cavity.
I would recommend winding it out 1 turn at a time (and 1/4 turns after about 10 full turns) and lightly tugging on the handle - this way you'll
feel when it's been wound out just enough to remove the handle and not too much to loose the thing in the damn door cavity.
Having said that if it does happen - all is not lost. Removing the door card only takes 15 mins and if you have one of those cheap magnetic grabs you
may be able to reach it with that.

(Pictures 17 to 23 will help)
Hope that helps

Check the vortx site its good but might not explain your problem. I think the cables become unattached from the locking module as it has a cable from
the handle on the inside another one for the outside. As said undo the torx bolt above the latch but please do not remove or you will have same
problem i had that the damn thing did not want to go back in which is followed by much cursing and frustration. wiggle then pull the lock blank out
and check if your cable is attached to the handle. If it isnt reattach which will be fiddly but ok. If its attached it has likely come off from the
locking module in which case the door trim must come off and you need to reattach the cable from the handle to the module. If the module itself is
gone expect to pay £92 like i did before christmas. hope it gets sorted

Had one the other day at work and it was the cable end that attaches to the outside handle adjusted to tight ie it has little notches for it to go in
and if you make it fit as close to the outside of the handle it will for some unknown reasion not oped the door. Make sure the cable end attaches
around the middle of the handle. This will become much clearer when you have it stripped down.
And as what McLannahan said hold the handle out while unwinding the torx screw and this will aventually make the handle stay pulled out and make the
refitting much easier.
Hope this info helps, and if doesn't then sorry.
