Fuel tanks
Is it me or is the fuel tank in the book missing a couple of rather valuable dimensions? Or have I missed something?
Anyway, for those of you concerned about building your own tank (or terrified of being fried alive in my case) but aren't keen on buying one. I
think I may have found a solution- I think!
I saw last night the tank from an MK1 escort estate. Being from that donor I can't believe Ron didn't suggest it as an alternative to making one-
this tank is brilliant! Is bit bigger but not too much and even has convenient brackets for bolting to the chassis!
Dimensions: 220*270*660mm and 60mm from the top has a 40mm wide strip/bracket protuding horizontally around the outside. The one I saw even had a
rubber coating around the bracket that'd insulate it from the chassis. The refil pipe is at a relatively convenient angle (although would need some
modification) and sender and fuel line are on top in sensible places.
Seems perfect!
If I've worked things out correctly it holds 39Lt compared to the 27Lt of The Book one.
If anyone's desperate I'll try and knock up a from memory sketch tho' my drawing is pretty awful so don't expect too much! If only I that
digital camera...

A mate of mine at work says that the fuel tanks found in triumph spitfires would be good for a locost, don't know what capacity they are but the are
upright tanks and would fit nicely against the rear.

If i had'nt got the plastic tank,i would have gone for the spitfire or for a bigger tank MK1 cavalier.

Hello chaps,
I just thought i'd throw in my opinion (I know, nobody cares!)
I used the tank from a Vauxhall Chevette Saloon. its about the same size as the book tank in plan but around twice the height.
The fillers in the right place and it has lugs top and bottom for fixing. It fits between the back seat and the boot in the chevette and is always as
new from the scrappies because it's inside, mine even came with about 3 gallons of juice in it!
It's about 12 gallons I think.
WARNING - only source the tank from the SALOON (with the boot)not the more common HATCHBACK. The hatch tank is not suitable and is also outside in
the sh*t.
Just another option!

I got my tank from MK with the chassis,its about 5&half gallons which is just about right for me as i wanted boot space.
Last years price £80 from MK,but it is possible to get them direct from a nice bloke called chris who works at the factory.You can have a look at mine
when you visit,for a small fee ofcourse

Have been to Chris Gibbons site- v.nice build.
Haven't been able to see the fuel tank in any pictures but you're right about the boot lid looking A+. I very much liked the idea of shortening the
air intakes on the webers by fabbing his own- very locost'esque!

Chris is a damn fine chap amd makes just about anything from plastic, the tanks are the absolute dogs bits and still at last years price (apparently),

Hi All
Yes it is I Plastic tank man. Please don't believe everything you hear about me. Sometimes I can be a right ba***rd. Also I am prone to severe bouts
of sarcasm, ask chris gibbs, why 5 people should want to travel to le mans with me is a mystery. Still at least it's in 3 cars and we can all take
turns.

Try your local auto electrical suppliers ( I use Heathcotes in Rotherham) and ask for a Durite (that's the make) replacement sender unit. Comes with
instructions and fits tanks 5" to 24" deep. Should be around £18. Failing that a modified (i.e. bend the float rod) mk2 escort one does the
trick.
