American cars go all "eco"

Lincoln Unveil plans for an "Eco" car. A turboed 1.6 litre Focus sized car with 180 BHP. Tests show it can top 50 MPG (imperial) on gentle out of town runs.

A bog standard 1.6 petrol focus does 51MPG out of town. A 1.6 diesel focus does 70 MPG out of town, 78 MPG for the econetic version.

Do you reckon they could do something that actually was good if they tried?

Agreed, they have a long, long road ahead of them where eco and auto are concerened.

BUT this has to be seen as a quantum leap for them in real terms.

The underlying issue here though could be the torque required to haul their ample frames. maybe that's why V8 has been king for so long

My brother in law works in Northern Alberta as a diesel mechanic. He is the envy of all the pickup truck owners with his little Toyota Echo. He can actually drive to Edmonton without taking out a mortgage. A 5 hour drive.

Americans can't build cars. They build pickup trucks. That is their area of expertise and they should stick to it.

A while ago I was reading an american review of the Daewoo Matiz...

...in the end they decided that it would be really useful in the big cities, but would be regarded as a speed bump on freeways!

“People will be happy to buy a smaller car that is better for the environment and more maneuverable in the city as long as the vehicle has all the attributes they want.”

my old 1.8 petrol Bluebird does that!

are you rembering to convert from 'English' units to Imperial ?

43mpg for them
1.2 * 43 = 51.6mpg for us (they have big cars and small gallons )

but even then my old 106 (15 years old at the time) used to get better than that on long runs if I was a bit careful - and it had 4 gears and a single choke carb !

fair enough, I guess the 106 doesn't weigh much so it shouldn't be that surprising

maybe you can tell I've still got a bit of a soft spot for the 106 - I was quite attached to it..... (just ask mango )

that reminds me, one of my mates told me he was picking up a hire car in canada and while he was waiting a canadian guy came in to pick up his courtesy car while his pickup was getting fixed.
he filled in all the paperwork, took the keys and went to find the car. 1min later he comes back in (having found out it was a yaris) and says:
"what do you expect me to do with that ? put it in the back of my truck!"
