OT VW gamma head unit to MP3 & Maintain 6 CD changer

I would like to plumb my MP3 player into my VW Gamma head unit (last of the old shape Passat Circa 2004 ).

There are products out there that will do this but use they use the input the the CD changer uses.

Ideally I would like to maintain the CD functionality and add the MP3 anyone know how this can be acheived.

Thanks

Use one of the FM transmitters? 90% of the time, they sound absolutely fine.... Only if you are really a sound perfectionist will you be dissappointed. Otherwise, could you buy all the bits from Maplin and make a cd changer splitter, so both the changer and iPod are plugged in at once?

as disusses on an earlier thread there are transmiters that plug into either the docking port on an I-pod or the headphone socket on an MP3 player that can be 'picked up' on a spare radio channel. I use one myself as I only have a tape deck (Tape cos being an audiophile I prefer the crackles of ancient and inferior technology and pulling chewed tape out the slot )

Although some of the FM transmitters work reasonably well I'd still be tempted to wire in using one of the CD changer style interfaces so the quality doesn't suffer so much.

Does the headunit have a single slot CD player in it? If so once you'd got your MP3 player hooked up you might find you don't use the CD changer so much...

Also the old school tape adaptors often work better than the FM transmitters.

I guess it depends where and how far you drive, I've tried a few of the FM ones and generally you have to retune it at some point...

Mmmmm I have a FM fransmitter but I really am after a wired soloution ie plug in drive of.

As it always gets plugged in ( bluetooth handsfree kit fitted to car ) and run Tom tom on it ( it is actaully a HTC smart phone )

Must be a way ( I hope )

You can buy dedicated splitters that fit between the CD changer and the head unit..

Allows CD changer to run by default unless you flick a switch and plug in the MP3 player...

The VW Gamma unit usese some weird digital audio interface, so doing a DIY setup tapping into the audio feeds is not really that straight forward sadly... I tried to do it on my polo...

XCarlink has a pass through that allows the connection of the CD Changer via it so you can still have both the MP3 and the CD Changer function.

http://www.xcarlink.co.uk/

There's details on the front page.
