Lightweight Car Transporter Trailer Needed!
Hello...
Following from the discussion into what I can legally tow I have worked out that if using my defender as the tow vehicle I need a trailer with a
MAM(Gross Weight) of 1100Kg capable of carrying my Seven.
So, firstly, do they exist? And secondly anyone got one, or know where I can get one?!
Thanks very much

Depends on when you passed your test.
Old gits like me can tow a trailer.
Young dudes need to pass an additional test.

I worked out the following on this forum a few days ago after carefully translating the DVLA website blurb!
quote:
Without a +E entitlement you can:
Tow a Trailer with MAM of 750Kg. As long as the Gross Weight of the train (MAM of tractor + MAM of trailer) does not exceed 4250Kg
or
Tow a trailer whose MAM does not exceed the Unladen weight of the tractor vehicle. As long as the Gross Weight of the train (Tractor MAM + Trailer
MAM) does not exceed 3500Kg.
Which has left me in my current position!

Easiest way would be to have tow socket bolted to front of 7, and detachable beam axle bolted to chassis, slightly rearward of balance point.
Won't get much lighter than using the car chassis as trailer

You can ignore the weights on landrovers as they have a manufacturers registered towing capacity of 3500kg.
The joys of a commercial vehicle for a change.
That aside Brian James make the lightest trailers I should think, and not that
expensive relatively.
These do appear on Ebay but always sell around £800 so not a bad choice.

As i said, my fairly roubust, covered, trailer wieght 580kg and my car 540kg so with that along you done really.
- So without know exact figures, a BJM minnomax or somthing should be well under wieght wise, just depends what its plated at as it will no doubt be
more.
Hence the attraction to a DIY build trailer.
Look around on ebay, ph's, raced and rallied etc.

I think that's right, there should be special concessions for older people. I'll see if I can think of a few others

In the old days, before 1999 you could shove a tow bar on anything and pull, this us where the calculation comes from.
Where manufacturers specifically designed cars to tow they were sold with a documented towing capacity, for Landrovers this is 3500kg.
If you have a google on towing capacity you will find some tables like this
one

The new Brian James A-Sport fits your requirements
with a gross capacity of 1000kg, and a load capacity of 660kg. however its bed width is only 5ft-6ins, which may be too small.
its listed at £1049+vat.

i have an unplated trailer, no mam to worry about, they would have to weigh me on a weigh bridge, which i doubt they would bother as long as the
weights i tell them sound likley. also unless my car weigh 800kgs or more then id be under 1100kgs easy.
im in merseyside, so you can borrow it, mates rules apply, you break it/crash it, you pay for it. u2u me if interested

I beleave if the trailer is unplated, if they wieght it, they then multiply the weight by 3 (for a general purpose or car trailer) to give an MAM.
- Proberbly work well for you, unlaiden maybe 300kg, mam of 900kg, load limit of 600kg.
- BUt thats why i have fitted a plate declairing my MAM as 1200kg (curb weight and manufactors towing limit of car) otherwise the trailer is
580kg.
Or, in more a likely sitiuation. I do actaully know the figures, and they all just about within somthing sensable. And i do now have weighbridge
papers for both the car and trailer. (although im not sure i'll carry them all the time!)

I hired my trailer from
Barlows in
Leyland. They charged £30 odd a day. Would the easiest solution not be to get someone a bit older to tow for you? It'd only cost the price of a
pint or so. Heck, if I weren't working so much I'd help anyone with their SVA just to watch the test and see how they got on. It's a
really important and nerve racking stage for us builders.

Thank you very much for this offer. I may have sorted one with another forum member, but if that doesn't work I will drop you a U2U.

It would be the easy solution but with my parents away for the next week I have no choice! It isn't going for SVA yet, just to the Mac#1 Factory
for the final bits and bobs. I have actually spoke to Barlows but they don't have a trailer light enough!
Just a quick note to say, this forum is incredibly helpful! I am always amazed by the generosity of the members on here!
