Oscillating Engine Drawings

I appreciate that most of you will take no interest but I have done some oscillating engine drawings, they are in my photos page.

The dimensions should all be there that you need if you do want to make it. Make all the bits out of brass or ali. (except the crankshaft )

You will need access to a lathe

Will run off compressed air easily enough. Or if ya want to, build a boiler... I can soon draw one up for you

Thought it might provide a little project for when the locost isnt coming on so well.

Let me know what you think of the drawings anyway. All criticism taken.

Cheers

Hi Dave,
Looks nice. Lovely drawing. Have you actually built it? Did it work?

Doesn't the interesting bottom lip on the cylinder skirt foul the crank pin and prevent it rotating more than 1 turn? Perhaps you might need to clip something off there to get it turning freely (?).

Dave

There was a problem yes....oops, drawing has no been modified appropriately all solved.

I havent built this engine no. I have built one similar a few years ago, but it was about 3/4 of the size. It will work though honest

I'm sure it will work, given a spin in the right direction to start it.

Are you studying engineering at Warwick Uni? and if so are you attending the recruitment open day at Arup this afternoon? or are you not that far into the course yet?

regards
Dave

I am doing Mechanical Engineering at Warwick yes. I'm only in my first year. And I have lab work all afternoon (until 6! ) today, so i couldnt go anyway

The lab is on tensile testing I think, so it should be fun anyway.

Cheers

U say interesting! When i did those in my first year they did have have the habit of making the praticals a bit boring. Saying this, im doing auto so only the things that related to auto interested me. If you are doing the UTS one, at least u get to break stuff i suppose!

Good luck with your course and if u want a placement year start looking early, im going through it at the moment and the prospects arnt looking great. Anyone want to offer me a job for a year?

Oh and on the subject of Pro E, we have started using it this year, i find it so much easier to use than AutoCad for 3D. You can knock up a respectable 3D model in no time.

Just got back from 3 hours of breaking little tensile test specimens and giving everyone heart attacks when they go BANG .

The course is virtually all maths right now, so it makes a break (no pun ) to do some practical i spose.

I am not planning a placement year (course is long enough as it is) but i have some work over the summer working for a local engineering firm at home.

Pro E and Pro D are both good for 3d, i use Pro D, keep it simple and like you say you can do a 3d model in no time. It great.

Cheers
