Correct, what else could you need? for an over 3 year car V5, Insurance and MOT, you dont need an mot, the online service at the PO will tell them that.

Since being able to tax on line thats all I've done, far easier than going through the counter clerk.

I would of thought so, it can't have an MOT certificate so you can't produce one!

The post office staff can be right annoying tho, my wife tried to tax our car the other day and they almost refused because the V5 was in her maiden name and her insurance was in her married name!

As far as I was aware it only needed to be insured, not that the person who was insuring it had to have exactly the same name. If i had been there i would not of been so polite as my wife was i think......

doing it online is properly easy direct.gov.uk - type in the reference number off the v5c or tax renewal reminder and it automatically checks the insurance & (if applicably) mot database. Ticket arrives in 3-5 days

It isn't a Q plate is it? I had this with my kit 2 years running. It is a known fault with their computer system and there's nothing they can do.

There is a form you can fill in that states that you don't need an MOT. Sorry, I can't remember the number, but you can download it from the DVLA web site. It worked for me. The post office didn't like it, by the look on their face, but did what it said anyway.

Take the V5 with you to the PO to state when the car was 1st registered.

Also take some ID maybe driving licence or utility bill, i was asked to do this not sure why.

yes its a Q plate. i have just contacted VOSA and they say that i dont need to have an MOT and my car is registered within the last two years. so is it a case of going to the post office and explaining that to them. but the PO can check online if the car needs an MOT or not and what if it comes up and says that i need one and they refuse to give me a tax disc

the girl on the phone said that i could fill out a v112 form that apparently exempts my car from MOT

What i am confused by is the radio adverts that say you are covered immediately if you tax online. So what happened to the offence of "failure to display valid road fund licence" which is supposedly a non endorsable £60 fine??

Go to the DVLA "local Office" and plead your case.

Hi Paul, after spending 45 minutes having my day wasted by two pigs in blankets (a cuntstubble and his CPO) because I hadn't changed my tax disc over I think it works something like this:

You must be taxed (obviously) and buying online covers you immediately. There is obviously a delay in recieving your tax disc and then you are allowed some time to swap the discs over. I think this is a period of 3 weeks from your current discs date of expiry. If the men in blue catch you with an expired disc and it is within this period then they generally waste your time and fill out a small red form which is then used to check your cover and bill you if necessary. If you're covered then you dont hear any more about it.

If its after this grace period then they can tow your car away if its on the road OR they can do you for nondisplay if they catch you while driving.

i would just tell the cops if i got pulled that the car was taked online and keep a copy/printout of the page that states that your car is covered in the car with you.

as for me, im filled out a V112 exemption from MOT form that you can fill out for any car that is registered within the last three years and taking that around to the PO with V5, ins cert, I.D and Letter with address on it.

true, but i'm nervous cos my V5 says first registered in 1980 (age related plate) but it was actually only registered in october 2007.

I'm going to go the V112 route but i'll be interested on other opinions

The mot thing with Q plate is a known fault with the system and usually only gets sorted at the local VOSA office. The computor system the PO use shows your car needing an MOT because it's a Q plate and it used to be all Q plate had to have an MOT as Q plate was only for rebuilt vehicles. As for failing to display your tax disc you are correct it's a £60 fine if you don't regardless of whether you've paid for one if you are evading tax the penalties are much more severe but failure to display will still get you in trouble especially if you argue with the police officer!!!!

Thats where my confusion was - it seems totally contrary to the wording of the advertisment on the radio by the DVLA which says you are covered immediately!!

Having looked on the Direct.gov website, the official line is.........

"You can renew your tax any day from the fifth day of the month.

If you prefer to tax in the last few days of the month, there is now an exemption from the offence of not displaying a tax disc. This exemption covers the first five working days of the month and allows time for the new disc to arrive in the post.

The exemption only applies if applications are made before the current tax disc or SORN expires."

I picked up on the TAxed immediatly thing at the weekend.

I think the point is YES your car is taxed immediatly, therefore you wont be prostituted for not being either taxed or soned.

BUT it is still an offence to drive it on the road without a valid tax disk displayed. So it has to stay on the drive until it comes through the post

Edited having read above post
Does it really!!??

The other thing to note if, as I suspect I've just done, you lose the paper you've just paid cash for (the tax disc), it's another £7 for a new one!!! For a bit of paper!!!
To explain: the tax expires at the same time on my tintop & Indy. I have one, but can I find the other...??? Rss...
