Well this is the best bit, although I saw a plate in my rear view mirror, when he came past me he didnt have a rear plate on view. So once the damage was done there wasnt a number to take down

Er are you sure you were awake?? How did you see the plate in the rear view mirror? Bikes don't have front number plates???

Well every man to his own i say, I can see both sides but i wish it were simple like this;

If the person over/undertaking were not one step away from an imoeba AND had a concept of the relationship between speed/distance/time ONLY then i would happily sit at a constant speed and relative position on the road to let them over/undertake and do what they want.

I would also like other people to do the same for me if one day i felt like going to tear up the road!

Just to add: This is never the case, there will always be one imoeba out there to finish your life off whether on a bike or in a car!

Hmm.

1mph is equal to about 1.47 feet per second

Rule of thumb safe distance between 2 travelling cars is 2 seconds.

Therefore, at 1mph the gap should be about 2.94 feet.

If you would have had to brake to let the bike in, then the gap must have been less than 7ft (average bike length).

So you were either doing <2.5mph, or you were too close to the car in front.

Even to triple that (to give him a bike length either side to squeeze in) you'd still have to be doing less than 7.5mph.

So why were you driving dangerously close to the car in front?

<facetious mode off>

After being a statistical member a year and a half ago, i don't want anyone anywhere near me.

Doing 120 miles a day, doing 60-65 tops apart from overtaking.

I am ready to get STAY AWAY FROM ME stickers in my car.

Just got a new one just over a month now, driven 3k so far and allthough keeping my distance etc. my windscreen is full of stone chips.

Have allready counted 9 of them.

enough craig bashing, im the one with the broken wing mirror without having any of the fun of wizzing past people on a motorbike in heavy traffic .

If were splitting hairs I'd have to say your maths was suspect. You havent factored that I would have been braking not to simply let him in but to create a safe braking distance between him and me, and him and the car in front.

edited to add that I know how I reacted wasnt the best course of action, I can only blame spur of the moment, fit of rage type thinking. I shouldnt have got annoyed at someone else driving dangerously is the moral of the story, but "king of the roads" can get frustrating - nobody is perfect, right?!

Is the correct answer.

If you travel the motorways, you'll get someone driving too close every single day in life.
When passing slower moving traffic, it isn't always possible to just move over.

When stuck in a situation like this, I go for an extended window cleaning session with the washers. It's innocent and not inflamatory and whoever is too close will pretty muchy always pull back almost automatically. I've got the space I wanted and haven't contributed to an escalating fight that cannot do anyone any good.

It's much safer and far less inflamatory than brake testing, gesticulating and all of that nonsense.

The older I get, the more I realise that.

1) The driving standards of others is not something I have a right to police.

2) Life's much too short to be getting annoyed about stuff like this.

3) We can all improve our own driving.

I've used the washer jet trick a few times as well.

Thing is, as I'm getting older I'm getting less tolerant. Maybe there are more people on the road driving like idiots or I'm just getting cranky.

But if the limit is 30, i'll be doing 30. No matter how close you get i'll still be doing 30, i'll just be doing it whilst getting PI**ED off with you.

Now don't get me started on people driving around roundabouts incorrectly ....... oooh, i could swear.
