where to buy fat mains cable extension
Ok, let's say I want to use my MIG in the garage, off the cooker socket in the kitchen.
Is it possible to buy extension cable that is more than 13 A? (locost style).
what about the 110 V stuff - that'll be higher current stuff or not? (doubt the insulation is gonna fail at 240 V).

You will have a local electrical wholsaler nearby who can supply by the meter....
Make sure you size the cable correctly!

My extension leads are in steel wired armoured (swa) cable and SY.
Whatever I can borrow from work really

what's the amps on the welder? mines a 175 and even on full power welding the digger was only on a standard 30ft 13amp extension lead. It was a
huge welding job and the lead was fine afterwards. It's only using an old arc welder that I've melted the plug onto the socket and that
might have just been a bad wiring job, me replacing the fuse with a sawn off nail might have contributed too...

^^^ know what you are saying - it is all a bit meaningless as all the juice goes through a tiny single wire - T~HE F~USE/.
I am trying to optimise as much as possible my welding environment.
caravan hook up cable - "16 Amp" is the magic word for ebay.

I got a hoofing great roll of 4mm2 Arctic Cable from City Electrical Factors for a few quid, and put my own ends on. Very Locost!

Because even a medium sized hobby welder should be used with a 16a plug, it'll blow fuses at higher setting on a 13a.

my 150amp welder has never blown a 13amp fuse or tripped the RCD ..... maybe i'm just lucky.
I also completely unroll the extension before welding.

mine used to blow 13A fuses. I have a roll of 2.5 flex i think it is. Maybe connect to a C20 mcb if you have the luxury of choosing.

^^^ I use mine off the cooker socket as it would trip the RCB (?) for the garage - hence then need for extension.
Not sure what amperage my cable is but I might as well go to maximum thickness I can find which is the 16 A caravan hook up cable.
I looked at City Electrical Factors - there is one about 5 mins walk from where I am sitting but it appears they only sell to trade, is that
correct?
Also they would sell a big reel, far more than I would need.
