205gti leaking water when pushed hard?

I went out in the gokart yesterday and was being plenty generous with the go-pedal. I eventually made my way over to the co-op and parked up, when i came out there was a stream of water running from underneath the car. Had a quick look and there was a rapid drip from the underside of the engine but with the whole sump being wet i could have been originating from almost anywhere.

Checked the water level, hot but plenty in there so I drove it to a friends house going gently - gauges were all fine. After staying there 45minutes and coming out there was literally just a single drip under the car.

Can anyone think of a diagnosis? Should I dump a bottle of K-seal in it and hope for the best, or has the water pump disintergrated etcetc?

Diagnosis: water leak!

You have got to find where the leak is coming from, dry off as much as you can and then check main componants around the engine, water pump, hosing etc

at least its not oil, water isn't that nasty to clean up

diagnosis, prognosis and a treatment plan would perhaps be more useful

Sounds typical 205 to me! Check it again from cold. I would avoid any anti-leak stuff - it causes more problems than it fixes! You may bell find you have a perished pipe somewhere, that is leaking aorund the clamp (lots of our 205 lines were - we just cut all the affected hoses back by 20mm and all was well).

If you look at the water pump, they'll be a small hole in bottom of the casting near the shaft and chances are they'll be water or discoloration around it meaning the water pump seal has failed. Missy’s car did this big time but it’s sorted with some mustard and egg in the coolant bottle. Checked the level last night and its fine and the pumps totally dry just as well as the pumps a pig to get out

are you sure you didn't over fill it in the first place ?

is it overheating ?

twybrow - yeah the fact its 20 years old and french, I was expecting it to be a little "loose", is it just me or have the engineers managed to fit all of the parts into a space far far to small to hold them? finding a perished pipe sounds like a weeks work!

Whippy - cheers, I will look around where the water pump is located for discolouration once I've got it jacked up

mcerd1 - there is a very slight leak from the rad which caused the level to drop recently, i refilled it to near max so it maybe pushing the limit. Its not overheating, the temp gauge is sitting comfortably at half way

The other common culprit on 205s is the metal collant pipe that joins the lower rad hose to the hose running behind the engine block. The metal pipe is secured to the inner wing right down the bottom (easy to access from below). These often corrode and weep water.

New part is about £10 from Pug IIRC and it's worth replacing the hose clips at the same time for decent stainless Jubilees.

if I filled up my 106 to the max it used to wee it back out again when you got it hot

it then settled back down to somewhere just above the min mark (when cold) - I couldn't find anything wrong (and still seems to be fine, ask mango / mcspeedy) but the min mark was way down the bottom of the header/expansion tank

couldn't tell you what temp mine ran at though - it only had a warning light

My old 205 gave me two major water leaks, one was a steel pipe, one was a rubber pipe. Both had split from old age. Both went big style whilst under load. But both (from memory) were at the back end of the engine and you need 3 elbows (per arm) to get to them to replace them.

I miss my 205's. Must think about getting another one soon before they get too expensive to buy again.

I had a 89G 1.6GTi over 10 years ago. It started to consume water, then one day I noticed that the front carpets were wet.
It turned out to be a pinhole in the heater matrix.
When they built 205s, they started with the heater....





He's whittling on a piece of wood. I got a feeling that when he stops whittling, something's gonna happen. (OUATITW/Cheyenne)
