Scrappage Allowance - Help
Morning one and all,
My dad has been looking for a new car for the last few months, I tracked down a great deal on the t'internet but before he had chance to sort it
out the price shifted by about a grand! Funny that isn't it
Anyway can anybody give any suggestions as to how he can benefit from the scrappage scheme, his car is a 52 plate and still worth a few quid.
I was thinking that I may be able to find somebody with a £200 banger that they may want to make a few quid more on if they would help do the deal.
The car has to be in your ownership for 12 months or more and be T&T'd.
Any suggestions welcome.
Many thanks,
Steve

It's too late to buy one now as the scheme it only running for 11 months to stop people buying a banger to chop in. The car you exchange has to
be "T" plate or earlier to qualify as well.
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

AFAIK the rules have been designed to prevent this. The registered keeper of the banger has to be the same person that the new car is registered to.

Yes I understand that but what would stop me finding somebody with a £200 car, getting their name on the new cars paperwork then just swapping the log
book over straight away? Give them £500 for the the help so in effect they have made £300.

You have to have been the registered keeper for at least a year aswell..
It covers some of the early v reg's aswell. My mums just look at doing it with her w reg yaris but its a couple of months to new.
As said the 2 grand will be added onto the new car price in some way or another aswell so the deal is poo either way.

Found this on the Autotrader website so looks to be ok.
The Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform (BERR) also confirmed drivers can ask a friend or relative to trade in a car for
scrapping on their behalf.
The friend or relative can then transfer ownership to the buyer, who will receive the £2,000 discount without having to scrap their own car.
I need to find a willing volunteer who wants to make a few quid! ANybody have a donor on SORN that they fancy a few quid for?
Thanks,
Steve

It's a package designed to encourage the naive into buying new-cars!
Yes, I know the economy is in such a state that stimulating car-manufacturing is good, but come on... if you can't knock MUCH MORE than £2k off
a forecourt price without introducing a trade-in, then you shouldn't be trusted to go out and buy cars on your own!
Sure, it may save you a grand or so when looking at a Mini or a Porsche, but most other brands will be up for a SERIOUS deal if you just haggle
without introducing a trade-in!

Scootz,
The car in question is a Xsara Picasso, old shape.
I have tried a couple of dealers and they cannot get anywhere near the drivethedeal price, even with the cash sitting on the desk in front of the
sales managers nose!
The drivethedeal price is about £7400 including the scrappage allowance. The dealers I have tried are all about £8900 after serious haggling.

Sorry Steve... just re-read my post and it seems like I was directing my opinions at you.
That wasn't my intention... I was commenting on the general intention of the scheme!

I agree Scootz most people will not have done their homework and they could probably get a better deal if they tried. In this case it would be
worthwhile to try and work my way around it as it will save about £1000 even after paying a helper!
Thanks for your help,
Steve

As the manufacturers have to underwire this scheme by £1000 per car, have they just raised their wholesale price to the dealers?

Surely tho, the car having 2 owners on the V5 before it's even driven a mile will depreciate it so much that you lose the 2K discount in the 1st
place?

It's only the same as buying a demonstrator from the garage and they aint exactly bargains. He will keep it for a long while anyway so
it's irrelevant.
Thanks,
Steve

It certainly seems as though that's what has happened. A couple of months ago the car was £8400 on drive the deal now it's £9400 if you
don't have the scrappage allowance.

Honda have decided to offer the scrappage allowance
£1,000 from the government
£500 from HUK
£500 Dealer
Which means that if you were to buy a Jazz the dealer would be out of pocket as there isn't sufficient margin to cover the subsidy.

I noticed a Citroen advert on the radio earlier today for the C1 - £99 down , £99 a month .... and it did get me thinking - then the crunch - the
offer only runs till May 17th ? ?
The scrappage thing starts on May 18th.......WTF
There are a lot of things about it that caught my attention - mainly the £99 down (tax runs out on my Corsa soon) , then £99 a month (I would save
most of that with cheaper road tax , cheaper insurance and less petrol to buy)
But even I am not daft enough to run out and buy a car in the next ten day

Had a Xsara Picasso bought new in about 2001, and while it never let us down, I absolutely detested it. So did wife.
Re the scrappage thing, why would you need T&T on a car that's to be crushed. Dealers wouldn't be thinking of reselling per chance
would they!

It dont need to be taxed - but does have to have a current MOT .
I think I may just not bother to tax the `shed` , run the Fury as a daily-driver for a few months - and see if any better offer's come along
(when the dealers/manufacturer's realize no one is buying....despite the wonderful deals )

The tax runs out on my rover 600 at the end of the month and I have been thinking of changing it, so could be interested in doing the deal near the
end of month, if your serious about it.
Send me a U2U if you want to discuss it.
Paul.
