Tintop - EGR Valve

It seems this valve needs replacing on the g/f's Vauxhall Astra 1.6 (2000/X). Was quoted £200 at a local garage, but see the part is ~£45 on ebay - does anyone know how easy (or not) a job this is to replace?

Muchos gracias

Mark

Don't know about the Astra but the one on my clio was a 5 min job it was 3 bolts holding it onto the exaust manifold and an electrical plug. Cant see it being much different on yours

Hope it helps

Some Vauxhalls (*** but not all *** ) also need a software box ticked or you get the MIL light on.

Not sure if the Vauxhall Laptop diagnostics for sale at a very low price on the net will do it.

This shows you how to do it http://astra.autokacik.pl/technika/napraw/egrp.html OK ! --- its in Polish but the pictures are brilliant. Just use an old coke can to make a blanking gasket.

On the Landrovers we blank the ERG valve off and throw it away never causes any problems after doing that

Scot's do it better in Kilts.

I wouldn't remove it completley, just unplug it. the valve still needs to be "closed" effectly seperating the exhaust from the inlet. If you remove it completely then the two will always be linked.

Failing that, take it out and clean it with brake cleaner to remove the soot.

Actually Quite the reverse is true blank off the valve and either leave the redundant valve connected or get a vauxhall dealer to patch the ECU program so the ECU dosen't do a test to see if the valve is present on the valve during warm up.

as above the dealer blanks them off then download new setting the the ecu use a coke can cut a gasket and block it off some of these cars will cause no problems not having the ecu reset as for taking it off about 20 mins

Cheers for the replies.

She had it cleaned at last service as the car had some issues, and it was then fine for ~ 9 months. Issues have reappeared recently so from a peace of mind perspective I think we'll just replace it.

Cheers

I'd get rid as all the oily sooty crap clogs up the inlet manifold etc. I did this on my 320D..

Strongly advise getting rid of it ---- Vauxhall sell an official blanking plate --- they wouldn't do that if it wasn't a good idea to get rid of the valve.

With Vauxhall's I would strongly recommend twice yearly engine oil changes using only fully synthetic l 5w/30

I'll give in to your wisdom

But tell the missus it cost me £45 and 4 hours of hard graft lifting the engine out etc etc
