Shipping costs??????? HELP!

Im looking at buying an engine from the US. The seller has attached the paragraph for postage instructions,

NOTE TO INTERNATIONAL BUYERS (ANYBODY OUT OF USA)SAME PAYMENT INSTRUCTIONS AS ABOVE, ALSO NEVER PAY UNTIL YOU ARE DIRECTLY INVOICED FROM *************, USA SHIPPING RATES DO NOT APPLY TO ANY INTERNATIONAL SALES, LARGE EXPENSIVE ITEMS WILL ONLY BE SENT THROUGH UPS BECAUSE OF TRACKING AND PAYPAL'S SELLER'S PROTECTION POLICY , SMALLER ITEMS ARE NORMALLY SENT THROUGH USPS PRIORITY OR USPS AIRMAIL, THERE ARE NO TRACKING NUMBERS AVAILABLE FOR USPS SHIPMENTS, WE WILL NOT BE HELD RESPONSIBLE FOR SHIPPING LOSSES, ALL THOUGH WE VERY SELDOM HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH USPS, ALWAYS BE SURE YOUR SHIPPING ADDRESS IS CORRECT AND WE HAVE A PHONE NUMBER!!!!, SO YOU CAN BE CONTACTED BY THE SHIPPER OR YOUR CUSTOMS DEPARTMENT IF THERE ARE ANY QUESTIONS OR PROBLEMS, CUSTOMS AND DUTY FEES OR TAXES ARE THE BUYER'S RESPONSIBILITY, WE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR DUTY OR CUSTOMS FEES, PERIOD!!!! WE WANT TO HELP ANYBODY ACROSS THE WORLD, BE SURE TO FOLLOW ALL THE GUIDELINES NEEDED TO ENSURE A SMOOTH TRANSACTION

What do they mean about Duty and custom fee's? What are these? how do i get and pay for them?
Sorry i dont have a clue.

When your item lands in the UK the shipper will contact you before delivery and tell you what fee's are due, you can normally pay over the phone, they will then deliver.

If its on the customs sheet as a "gift" it will come in for free, provided its not inspected and deem#d not a gift by HMC.

However, don't think you will get away with "gift" on an engine.

eta not sure what duty will apply for an engine, guess VAT @ 15% plus whatever else duty they may add ?

VAT and an import tax. the vat is charged on the item cost, the shipping costs and the import tax.

The problem with import tax is that motorcycle parts dont have a set category (or at least I couldn;t find it) so import tax can be between 5% and 15%.

Getting things from the states really isn't worth it with the strong dollar and weak pound once you factor in shipping and the import duty and then vat on top of the lot!

To pay it, you tend to get a letter from the shipping company once it lands in the UK, DHL or whoever asking for you to pay the fees, you can do it online normally. once paid the item is released and they send it on to your home.

Hope this helps.

EDIT - TOO SLOW! but to add, HMC are onto gift and warrenty statements (which were both used to swerve fees in the past) a few years ago - not many get through unless small and of low value.

As above - VAT and import duties (which vary depending on type of item) but guess you can add about 20 - 25% onto the cost of the item PLUS shipping. You may want to really look into this before buying an engine - unless the saving is very large. Also be aware that engine specs may not be the same as for the UK market - especially if its from California where the emmissions gear is larger than the engine!!

Whats the engine??

Standby for a stiffing by HMC

I bought a camera from the states - paid in dollars what I would have paid in pound over here.

By the time they'd added their 'bit' and VAT on everything I saved a fiver.

Robbing Pillocks

Rip Off Britain - if you don't pay too much directly for the goods you end up paying indirectly with import duty, VAT etc........

It works the other way to, when we used to send spares to the states we had to call bearings for example "spacers" if we wrote bearings on the customs invoice the import duty was extortionate, done by governments to get people to buy from their own shores.

UPS will look after everything for you. You only need to sign over your children and all your other possessions, and you'll have your engine from the States.

I believe if you get them to list the engine as a classic spare you get away without paying duty. A mate of mine used this trick when importing an engine for his 240Z

Cheers

Be prepared to pay an outrageous handling fee to the shipping company as well, for dealing with Cutroms on your behalf...

The reality is that it's all a bit hit & miss - some of the tactics mentioned may work on some occasions and not others - it's the luck of the draw.

As RK says, UPS will deal with everything but they will demand COD (no cards when I did it!) for the balance before they let you have your goods.
