Buy one of those pen size extending magnetic pick-up tools from Toolstation, B&Q, Screwfix etc. etc.
Even drill a hole in the lower edge of the bell-housing to access before you start stripping the box off.
BOL.

I feel your pain!
I once dropped the dizzy drive gear of a Mini engine into the depths of the gearbox.
It was a 8 hour engine out and strip job from the rear of my GTM

I tried that but it just kept clinging to the flywheel

As above then, I have one of those extending magnets on a stick, actually like a small car aerial and its very useful for probing as you can steer clear of other stuff.

Worth a couple of quid even if it does not work in this instance.

^^^ tied that too but there isnt enough room to get it at an angle that avoids the flywheel.

Is the bell housing on studs or bolts? Can you slacken the nuts/bolts enough to leave a gap for the pin to fall out? If it is on bolts. replace a few with threaded rod to give more movement.

I couldnt get the gearbox back far enough to open up a big enough gap.

Got it out now. Managed to yank the engine forward enough to get my fingers in the bell housing. Turns out its made of brass thats why i couldnt get it with the magnet

Been there, done that! Fortunately managed to retrieve it after fishing around with a strong magnet on a stick for about an hour.
