How do i remove a wasps nest?

Simple question - whilst sorting out my attic, i've found a wasps nest. Its right in the eves, How do i get rid of it?

(i appreciate that in theory the wasps abandon a nest - but hornets can take over one and i'd rather not have it around).

Worth a call to your council to see if they offer this service.

first up, theres a spray foam wasp killer stuff you can get from homebase, cover the nest in that to make sure theres nothing living in it, wait for the foam to dry up a bit, then hoover it up
use an old vacuum though, because your vacuum will stink of ammonia afterwards. take the time to look inside the nest though, they're pretty amazing how they're made

put a basin/bucket underneath it (to catch the mess)

then spray it with this stuff (you can stand a good bit away from it)

done it a few times now - once they built a nest around an old can of the foam that had been left from the time before

With this cold weather it will be dying or dead ,leave it until after Christmas, put a bin bag over it and remove it. Trust me Ive been doing Pest control for 20 years!!! Dont pay someone to kill it or buy any products.

Part of the problem is its right in the eve's . I mean its about 10" high and goes almost ceiling to floor. Getting into it to put things under is going to be one hell of a struggle.

Did have a problem with lots of wasps during the summer but couldn't find the nest. Only found it now as i'm sorting out some insulation (pushed too far into the eve's by the previous owner) which is causing condensation in the attic.

the foam will still work - the nests disolve as soon as the stuff hits it and it kills the wasps (if there any in there) at the same time

its just a bit messy to clean up

I just ran something thin around the outside of it where it was kinda "glued" to the inside of the roof and scooped it up.

The are incredibly fragile as they are effectively made of paper (well chewed up and spat out wood).

But as someone else said very cool to look at inside.

I gave it an initial prod from distance with a pool cue and one leg still on the loft ladder, nowt came out so I just cut it away then.

I don't think there is any need for any sprays etc if its empty and it really ought to be at this time of year. You might find the odd dead or dying wasp hanging around but they'll be as dopey and slow as anything in the cold.

Call the local Angler's Club.

They should come and take it as the grub is ideal for fishing.

Eeek - found another nest about 30cm away. Unfortunately i managed to catch the first nest and it dropped onto the top of the plasterboard. They are very flimsy. Panicked ..... and nothing happened. About 10 seconds later whilst I was still watching it, a bit of condensation dropped onto my hand. I think the neighbours may have heard my swearing as i thought it was something else.

Anyway, in the bin now so all sorted. thank you.

Just to be safe, poke it with a stick, to see if there's anything in it, then if nothing stings you, put it in a bin bag

Sod the council dude! We called them out to exactly the same thing a couple of months ago, we had one the size of a football in the loft. They came out, spent around 5 mins spraying the foam stuff into the hole in the wall they were using as an entrance and left!! "We are not allowed to go into the loft sir, if there is still a problem in a week or so call us again and we'll come out for free". Bloody hope so as well, £60 to do sod all that I could have done myself robbin' sods!!

I went into the loft a few days later and finished off the few that were left with the foam, there were dozens of the little sods dead or dying everywhere around the nest (shame), then just to be on the safe side I broke the nest up.

Do NOT pay the council for doing absolutely bugger all! (we do enough of that already)

HTH

It looks like the Midget is winning at the moment......

Being allergic to bee and wasp stings, use the spray, it works, best time is at dusk as the wasps or bees will not leave the nest at night, when the spray has done its work, next day remove.

We had one in the roof a couple of summers ago - the procedure is to have a few beers then go up a ladder in a t shirt and shorts and liberally squirt wasp killer around, whilst defying the little buggers to sting you.

Seemed to work OK for me.

i think you have to admit the wasps have won!
you must surrender to them and let them inhabit your domain as your new ruler, or declare war and demolish the house...!

First wasps nests we had we got the council and they sprayed it and removed it free of charge but this was in the halycon days long before Gordon Brown's economic miracle. The second one I poured petrol on and set it alight, but this was in a dry stone wall in the garden, so not particularly helpful to you.
You do know wasps are like frogs and quite a few other creatures in that they always return to the place they were born to breed?
