Upholstery Advice

Just wondered if we've got any upholstery experts in the house? I'm about to replace a broken 'S' spring on my sofa. The distance between the front and rear of the frame is 24" and replacement springs are available in most lengths. Does the spring need to be slightly shorter (say 22" ) and under tension when fitted or 24" in length and untensioned?

Phil
