Skype is like phone calls, only it goes through the internet and not phone lines (to put it simply)

Skype is a type of of Voip (voice over internet protocol) its very dependant on the quality of bandwidth and other factors for speech quality, 3 used to push a few phones with skype. Tesco use the O2 network so its dependant on your phone, O2 and Tesco's agreement with O2. I'd look at a 3 phone they do a good deal for £13 a month with free phone, tinterweb and you'll know for sure that Skype works.

Bob

My internet is via phone lines.
Skype is cheap though, if you call from your PC to a land line phone abroad.
ie: 1.5p/min to mainland China, 14p/min to a phone within the UK. WTF?
PC to PC free.

I have skype on my iPhone (Also available for other smart phones). I buy Skype credits to make calls to regular phones when I'm out of the country, even most public (free) WiFi can support this. I can obviously also freely communicate with people that have Skype running on their computers too.

I also use Skype to give music lessons (with video) to people in other parts of the world.

Using Skype while your Phone has Wifi access is doable from practically all smart phones problem is you'll get usage charges if your using 3G or edge which defeats the object a bit.
