MK2 Golf Starting Problems
I'm having problems getting my 1.8lt carb MK2 Golf to start.
Intermittently the starter is completely dead. Has been occuring for about a fortnight.
If I leave it a while then it starts again ok.
Today I picked up a replacement motor from the scrappy. This started ok on the bench. Bolted it all up to the car and exactly the same problem
occurs.
I'm not sure what this leaves as the problem. Scrappy told me the new one works and they gave me warranty so it's not in their interest to
lie!
Tapping the solenoid with a hide doesn't help.
Any ideas?
Thanks,
James

Hi JAMES
I'm thinking that your engine earth may be dodgy worth checking . Have you tried a jumper lead direct to the starter ?/or a hot wire to the
solinoid trigger terminal ?
just a couple of ideas
best wishes

Possibly a problem with the electrical section of the ignition switch, part is available seperatly from the steering lock/ ignition switch cost about
£20.00. common problem on golfs. to test, check for live feed to solonoid when playing up . hope this helps Rusty

I have a similar problem on my Audi of a similar vintage. Bizarrely and don't ask how I found out if I roll car back slightly while in gear
moving the engine round slightly it starts fine...
Now diagnose that one!
