OT - Washing machine's dead - help!
last night the washing machine stopped and started flashing some kind of error code
its a hotpoint WD440 washer dryer (no space for seperate ones) - the error code is the drying heat light flashing slowly while the power one flashes
quickly (no LCD display on mine)
googling the error is giving me mixed answers, but if I'm reading the error code right I think its something about a heater relay ?? (looked up
the parts places and kind find any mention of one )
I think I might still have a parts only warranty on this (will need to check later)
anyone got any ideas before I have to call someone out ?
(I can take a car or a computer completly apart and rebuild it, but I don't have a clue when it comes to washing machines )

was it washing or drying at the time?
gf had the same sort of thing, internet gave mixed results of the problem, took the cover off the bottom, removed the screw in filter that filters the
water outlet, and there was a fiver in there! fixed the problem, and she was £5 up!
i'd check all filters first

That's an F08 fault code, heater relay contacts frozen. The relay is part of the main PCB.
Looking from the back of the machine, the board is at the bottom left hand corner.
Remove the back panel and take out the board (can be a barsteward on Washer Driers, so many multi plugs )
Check the power tracks from the larger edge connectors, they sometimes blow or lift away from the board.
If they are OK, try tapping the top of the relay and refit board and try.
If it still gives fault code and there is a diagnostics port in the back of the machine where the board is, you are stuffed
New boards are about £80, but the eprom in blank, you would need an engineer to program it, around £100 extra.
If you have a 5 year parts only warranty, I would use it.

Hotpoint have gone bust, so parts warranty ain't worth spit. Neither is any other warranty really. It just means that they won't argue for
that period. The law however says you have rights.
So if you have had the machine for less than 6 years you can do what I did for my sister-in-law.
Write a letter to whoever you bought it from, stating that it has packed up and that you want it repaired. tell them that they have 10 working days to
effect the repair or it goes to Trading Standards.
This is the letter that I drafted for her:
I purchased the above item via my late husband’s credit card. It was delivered on the date and to the address as also shown above.
The washing machine suddenly stopped working several days ago. The power indicator neon does not even light.
I have had the supply to the machine checked and that is OK. I have checked the fuse in the plug and that is OK. So the problem is within the
machine.
As the machine is only a little over two years old, I feel that you should repair it. Under the Sale of Goods Act 1979 (Section 14.2), all goods
should be of satisfactory quality. Plainly this one is not, as I and indeed anyone else would expect to get considerably more use from a washing
machine than this.
I therefore expect the machine to be repaired at your expense, within the next ten working days of receipt of this letter. I feel that this is a
reasonable time for you to be able to effect repairs on this equipment.
Yours sincerely,
They replied within two days, telling her to select a new washing machine.
It was delivered and the old one carted away within the week.
Result!

Hotpoint as a manufacturing company have been long gone,they have been re badged Indesits for at least 10 years ,since the Indesit group took
Hotpoint over.
As far as I am aware Indesit are still on the go, I have a trade account with them and had a delivery of Hotpoint parts this morning.

back in the day when i was a school boy i used to have a weekend job doing deliveries for comet. indersit were referred to as indershit by everyone
at the yard even the managers. i recall on several occasions we delivered a machine on the sat and went back and collected usually within a fortnight
because it had gone wrong.

^^ well it was cheap and its done nearly 5 years work without any other issues so I'm not to unhappy....
