Changing Ignition switch on MK2 Golf
Another poxy problem with my beloved MK2 Golf.
The ignition switch has gone on it. I've bought a replacement switch and now want to fit it.
I got as far as stripping off all the stalks/switch gear etc. Now, I need to get the barrel/switch casing off the column so as to get the switch
out.
Whats holding it on now is a splined collar that sits over the splined steering column. It's completely stuck and I can't get it off.
It has (had!) a 2mm shoulder on the collar which is all there is to grip it with. I've tried a puller and a drift with club hammer. None will
release it. The result is a very 'nadged up' shoulder. I've even tried heating it with blowlamp to no avail.
Haynes just says "remove collar"- very helpful!
Any other suggestions (other than buying a new car!) please!
Thanks very much!
James
P.S. I suppose removing the whole column is a possibility- but as I've read it's somewhat integral with the pedal box I'm not too
keen!

"Customise it"
Put a key switch in the dash and a push button starter. Hide it under the dash or somewhere to baffle would be car thieves.
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Anyone?
If not, does anyone know if it will fail it's MOT like this- ie. column all reassembled but you need a screw driver into the new switch to start
that car!
Cheers,
James

Shouldn't have to remove switches etc, take off cowling, may// have to lower column slightlt, remove very small grub screw{possibly under red
paint blob] remove switch , refit in reverse. Some time since I did one , hope I've got it right. Rusty
