Posting valuable documents help

Hi All

I need to post three A4 ring binders containing documents that are worth around £8000.

I've spoken to the local post office (who aren't very helpful) and they suggested I break the bundle into smaller packages and these can be insured for up to £2k each - I can't break the bundle!

Any thoughts?

They need to go from South Wales to Birmingham so it's not too far for me to deliver (and a ride on the bike would be good!).

Ta in advance

Wyn

use a solicitor who can post within the DX system,. they will charge, but they are used to shipping valuable documents around all the time.

Or use a dedicated carrier who is prepared for the value of the documents,. not tried DHL/Fedex but they must be used to shipping stuff worth much more than that,..?

There are pro's and con's to spliting. But assuming there only worth £8k as the full set, only con's.

Have no advice as such but I guess for such a valuable/specialise parcel you proberbly will have more joy from a dedicated courier, just start ringing i guess.

Posting within the UK?

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

Can't offer any advice, but I'm intrigued as to what they are.

Bike ride is looking the best option so far!!

We built our own house and this is the VAT claim (you can claim the VAT back on a self build) so 560 invoices!

If they are just invoices then they themselves are not worth £8000 and if they went missing en-route you would not get £8000 for them I suspect.... If you photocopy them all (which you should have done for your records).... wouldnt a "normal" guaranteed next day delivery be sufficient!?

Thanks All

Tegwin - yeah you're right - it's like a lump of clay before being made into a valuable vase :-)

ragindave - looks like the option! It's almost ready top post so hopefully I'll get down to the post office with it this afternoon.

So Royal Mail use robots?
What's the difference here? Surely hand delivered is just the same only you don't have to hope they don't lose it

If you cant hand deliver personally I would use a courier rather than Royal mail, I write this as someone whom uses Royal mail for in excess of 100 items per day, anything of value that "cannot" be lost courier.

I know this post's late, (no pun intended) but it may be useful so here goes.

Three years ago I was sole executor of a UK will and responsible for handling probate. Mistake no1, I attempted to do it from Spain. I should have ensured that the person whose will it was appoint a sole UK resident trustee/executor.
All docs were photocopied, but only originals will suffice for probate, (will, death certificate and various bank documentation).
The package was registered here in Spain and tracked to safe ariival at Heathrow two days later. From then, the trail went dead and remained so for 6 weeks, despite dozens of phone calls to the probate office (Liverpool) and Royal Mail. At the six week point, the documents arrived back here (I'd made sure to write a return address on the package) IN TWO HALVES. Torn claen in two.
I had a pal flying to UK a couple of weeks later and he hand delivered the package.
As mentioned earlier, the Lawyers' DX system shifts 'high value' documents all the time and I'm sure that'd be appropriate and safe. Personal delivery is best and surest.

Thanks all

I posted the parcel yesterday via special delivery with £10k's worth of consequential loss - the first post office I went to had no idea about this and the second one took some head scratching!

Cost me £39! I'm really regretting not taking it up on my bike now but I had to get it in and the weather is cr*p for the bike!
