Holiday help.

I'm looking to take my two kids on holiday this summer. I've got a girl of 16 and a boy who is 12. We all get on really well and both are easy to take anywhere. Now we could go for the easy option of Spain/Turkey etc..but they would love to go to the USA. I've never been but really fancy going. We are looking at 7-10 nights and there seem to be some reasonable deals for Las Vegas (hotel based), but what looks really good fun is getting a motorhome and having a tour round, or perhaps a fly-drive...they are big Top Gear fans so perhaps fly out and buy a $1000 Cadilac and have a road trip!
Any advice or other suggestions or destinations would be greatly appreciated .

7-10 nights really is not long for a decent road trip as the USA is so vast!

We did two 2 week loops in enormous RV's when I was about 14 as a family. Did most of the obvious national partks... The problem was, we wanted to see so much in only a month... Did not stay long enough in one place to actually fully explore.

Depends what you and the children are intrested in.... I could quite happily have spend a week ambling around Yellowstone national park.. maybe hire a log cottage there or something?

Everything is so far apart in the US so far I have seen and would reccomend any of the following- Grand Canyon by Helicopter, Monument Valley, Bryce Canyon, Yosemite National Park, San Francisco, Las Vegas, San Diego, Los Angeles, Pheonix, Lake Powell.

You will need to plan your holiday very well, it was an 8 hours drive between Las Vegas and San Francisco for instance.

Went to Vegas last year, and with the missus and 2 daughters (then 14/16) Found it to be not very child friendly unless you like being hassled constantly by the little Filipinos handing out girly cards in fact shoving then into your hand, and the missus's hand, but fortunately not the kids.

However, we did an overnight trip out to Williams on Route 66, spent the night in a genuine 1950's motel and had a great barbecue dinner at one of the diners. Excellent stuff. Next day, grand Canyon which was jaw-dropping. And then back to Vegas for a night or two before we flew out.

Washington is great but compact, and stay away from the suburbs, or at least some of them. The Smithsonian museums are truly amazing if you like that sort of thing. New York however was where I would suggest. Again busy, but plenty to see and do for a few days. Maybe NY and Washington? drive between them and see some sights on the way with a stopoff?

Or do what I did and fly in and not go home until you have seen it all (still here 18 years later...).......

Although, it was all legal I should add.

Orlando is child friendly, all the parks (Universal/Disney/Waterworld), Kissemee (boggy creek airboat ride and weekend car cruise), Daytona (good visit), Titusville (NASA) and much, much more!

Would agree with that, but don't think that Orlando is anything like real and representative of America any more than Blackpool is real and representative of England. I'm sure you knew that though.
