You go to jail when you don't pay them but they fob you off when it's the other way round...

I agree! I spoke to someone today on the Child Benefit Helpline who claimed they were only there to make changes, not provide help......

I just got a letter and cheque back from HMRC for a miscalculation they made 7 years ago and I claimed back 6 - for the last 5 years they had been
claiming they never received my letter/forms/evidence even though I had a proof of delivery from the royal mail....they are simply not fit for purpose

My story sounds almost unbelievable , I am 67 & back in the early 70's I owed the irs around £170
This went on for a number of years & as Being self employed & having overpaid Tax they owed me
About £6700 but would not release that until I had paid them the £170 I owed, I refused & asked
them to deduct it from money they owed me, but no That would have been too easy this went on
to & fro for a couple of years more, then they sent the bailiffs, that not being fruitful ,
I was arrested & taken to court the following day.
The outcome was the Nice lady Judge asked their council if this was a joke, ordered them to
pay me what they owed less what I owed them + substantial compensation, I even got a ride home.
Jobs worth or what.

A recent Facebook post from a colleague;
quote:
I got a tax rebate today from my self employed NICs.
When I rang in November to declare my now "employed" status, they told me I was owed a rebate. I knew it would be a tiny amount so I told
them not to bother, I suggested they give it to charity, use it to offset my future tax demands or even put it towards their Xmas party. No, they
insisted, it's my money and I must receive it.
So two phone calls, a form (sent, completed & returned) and who knows what internal procedures later, my cheque for the princely sum of £2.50
arrived in the post today!
Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining about the thoroughness and transparency of the process. Nor am i complaining about the fact that
for once money is travelling in my direction rather than theirs.
But would anyone care to hazard a guess on the total all-inclusive cost of processing that refund? Cos I'm bloody certain it's more than
£2.50 in public money, giving me a theoretical net loss...

My tax affairs are very simple but I was self employed before retiring ten years ago. I recently spoke to Cheryl on their helpline asking to be
excused doing a self employed tax return as all I have is my pension paid by the government which has tax deducted at source. She went through a
checklist and when I declared that I had five grands worth of premium bonds and a piddly isa as my total savings she started asking me questions about
the 'bonds'. Was tax payed on the interest at source or did I declare the income and pay tax. Cheryl does not know what premium bonds are!
Handy if you work for the HMRC helpline.

Its nice when someone kicks them back in the bollocks, you'd think they'd learn and get their act together but they don't ... knob
