After hearing tales of woe about iphones, I bought a Samsung S2 18 months ago and it has never missed a beat. In fact the only thing stopping me getting an S3 is the S2! I got so cheesed off with nokia and sony breaking screens, I was going for an iphone but chose the sammy instead. Got it at a good price on ebay (nearly 200 quid below carphone warehouse price) I dont do contracts, a tenner a month with giff gaff and thats it. I don't know if you've heard of Ken's Tech Tips on the web, but a good source of info via free emails.

Is this iPhone 4 one you have owned from new or did you buy it from someone else? I'm just wondering if someone has tried unlocking it from its original network by jailbreaking it. This can cause a variety of issues. If you have owned it from new and it always fails to update, can I ask why you never got it replaced by Apple while still in warranty (I'm assuming it is not in warranty now?) Also, if you use the iCloud backup feature then you should be able to restore it completely from the backup even if you have had to reset it during the update.

Are you doing OTA (over the air) updates on the phone itself or are you still using iTunes to update it? The OTA updates have proven to be very reliable and generally painless. I've done loads of these both with public updates and developer-only updates and it has never missed a beat.

@benchmark51 - I had to laugh at your comment that "after hearing tales of woe about iPhones" you bought an S2. Firstly to generalise about "iPhones" is a bit unfair given they have been around since 2007 and have had 6 generations of hardware and many revisions and enhancements to the operating system in that time. When you have sold over 300 million of any product there will always be some "tales of woe" but given that every model of iPhone ever released has sold more units than all previous models combined, shows that there are plenty of people who love their iPhones too. For fun I googled for "love my iPhone" and got 1.2 billion hits whereas "iphone tales of woe" only returned a paltry 194000 hits. Draw your own conclusions. Hell, even googling for "elvis lives on the moon" returned 837000 hits...

Anyway back to helping the OP, here is a support article talking about iCloud backup: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4859

I hope this helps,
Craig.

Yes, but then Googling "quoting Google hit numbers is bollocks" returns 159,000,000.

pretty much everytime i install an update on either the iphone or the ipad mini it cant totally do it and goes into recovery mode. as both are connected to itunes this isnt actually an issue. the phone/ipad is backede up to the pc when i plug it in so the recover just automatically sorts it. dont know why it does it, but it isnt really an issue if using itunes.

Just take it into your local Apple store, they are usually really helpful. Never had a problem updating any of mine.....
