WTD: Laptop purchase advice

As per title - I need a new laptop - my current one is on its last legs !

Has anybody got any advice please.

Budget = £500 max, less would be preferable.

Not bothered about it being small - I like a big screen - current one is 17"

It doesn't have to be the latest gaming machine, but I would like something quick with decent storage.

What OS is the best currently ? I've heard Windows 8 is a PITA if you don't have a touch screen ? - not bothered about a touch screen.

Where's best to buy from - I've had good service from eBuyer before.

How do I easily transfer all the stuff from my old one onto the new one ?

There's that many to choose from, it's confusing !

A lot of Windows 8 problems disappear if you install Classic Shell ( http://www.classicshell.net/ ) I have installed on a few clients PC to rescue users from Windows 8 hell.
After iIt is installed it and you go back to an inteface very close to Xp, It is 100% free under the the MIT open-source license.

it can be fine tuned to suit user preference to mimic other Windows versions but having never went beyond Windows 7 on my own PC's I can't comment.Link to ClassicShell website
