Same story as the lorry driver in this country who claimed his lorry had a stuck accelerator.
Eventually after investigation and psychiatric reports, he was done for wasting police time. He was diagnosed as suffering Munchausen's
syndrome.

Latest news is Renault took the car for inspection and couldn't find any damage, including brakes. Now they are considering sueing the guy. I
wouldn't like to be this guy no matter if he's telling the truth or not.

yeah.
I couldnt beleive how all the press could have taken that seriously.
just turn the f77king ignition off, I had to shout each time it got mentioned.
or take it out of gear!

I think that the car was an automatic (can't get out of drive at over 50mph) and had a key card ignition (can be removed once the cars
started?).
Correct me if I'm spouting!

Apparently, it's an automatic. Ignition is started by "authentication" through this card, then a start button (which is not actually
the starting motor power but a kind of command, a digital push button which feeds a signal to a microcontroller). We've been discussing this in
a different forum and it looks like it could be impossible to stop by PHYSICAL means should the car go mad (but they don't seem to do that
anyway). In other words, the driver has no direct interface to the mechanics or electrics of the car at all, other than the steering wheel (next to go

This instance is one of many and is unavoidable in some circumstances as the mechanism controlling the accelerator is not physical it's
electrical. Anyone heard of gas by wire?
Well - to add injury to this story. I'm working with a company designing the first "Steer By Wire" - yep you got it, no steering
column!!! Just an electrical stepper motor connected to the steering wheel via wires to an encoder! Quite scary eh?  Sleep well.....

automatics have neutral
modern ones will also go into neutral if put into reverse on the move.
ive tried it with a hire car in the interest of science 
also, pulling out a renault key card DOESNT stop the engine. Om my wifes 03 megane, pulling out the card will not stop the engine and worse - it wont
let you stop the engine by pressing the start button a second time. The card must be in to start / stop, but not during run.
