Microwave warning

I don't know if this is common science knowledge ... but mrs Woodster nearly set the kitchen on fire by simply putting her asus android tablet on charge and leaving it on top of the microwave while it charged, some how the microwave has gone firkin hot And smells of burning even though it wasn't cooking anything it was just plugged in, I'm glad she checked it before we went to bed it could of been nasty ...... Be warned don't charge anything on a microwave

SWMBO often charges her nexus tablet and phone on the microwave. Never had any issues with it even if the MW is used.

Not sure how that could happen, I have the sandwich maker on top and never had an issue, LED under cabinet 12v transformer is also behind my microwave and I have had no issues.
Strange but sage warning Ta

Coincidence or your microwave is leaking which may be dangerous to your health

You haven't been fiddling with the microwave or bent the door?

It could well be that the WiFi or Bluetooth in the tablet that is affecting the electronics in the M/Wave and making it operate, or turn parts on etc.
ie a good old case of Radio Interference from the Tablet to the M/Wave.

Best not to put any devices that emit radio waves near the Microwave, and that includes your mobile phone, and any other Bluetooth enabled devices.

It will not do your M/Wave any good having the magnetron activated with out a load (food / glass of water etc) to dissipate the power into.

Its usually the other way arround. As your tablet emits about 80milliwatts max power, and the Microwave emits about 700+ WATTS power

Just keep an eye on it. Best Case is to get the microwave checked out. However I suspect that your local repairer will not be able to find a problem, unless he is an Electronics engineer with a keen interest in the RF spectrum.

Of course I could be completely wrong here, and it just a fault with your Microwave (or even poor design).

Just my 2d's worth.

Something else you shouldn't do with a microwave

"That thing you're thinking - it wont be that."

Microwaves do work around the same frequencies as wifi, but in a completely different power league. You could interfere with your signals but you won't activate your microwave with your tablet/phone. Microwave would need to be RF coupled to the phone/tablet REALLY well to even be able to measure the signal in the M/W, and that won't happen considering the shielding present by requirement on a m/w.

It is almost certainly just a coincidence IMO, correlation is not the same as causation. A microwave is well shielded on the outside as well as the inside (they all have metal cases with narrow slots for vents). To power the magnetron a heavy duty relay needs to be closed and the oven would have been making the usual humming noise if this had occurred.

Thinking about it if I switch on our microwave the wifi in the room cuts out and only comes on when its done. Don't think it's damaged at all though

Changing your wifi to a different channel might help with that...

Wont the case of the microwave act as a faraday cage, and earth any electromagnetic fields? Coincidence surely!

A quick update .... It's all very puzzling, we've tried to replicate the problem but no luck it's just left us really puzzled , I've done a google search and can find microwaves causing problems with wifi but not the other way round ...... Very strange

Thats correct, because your microwave is humped and blew itself up, and by sheer coincidence, her tablet was charging on top :-)
