Tips on fitting a new water main
So new house, many new problems!
(Sorry, I mean challenges)
Has anyone fitted a new water main themselves? For increasing the flow rate for a new boiler I'm thinking of doing that here.
It's about 20 metres or so, I'd guess, so perhaps rather that killing myself digging a 750mm trench that long I should be considering
getting someone with a mole digger thing to do it. Has anyone rented one of these and done it themselves? Or is that asking for trouble?
I dug a 4'' trench once before for a soak away but it didn't need to be that deep and wasn't through a load of roots that I
guess this would be!
Thanks,
James

Did mine beginning of the year with a 2.5T digger about 30M took me a day to dig it lay the pipe conduit and back fill.
It then took me, the wife and a 4x4 to pull the 25mm pipe through it ! completely underestimated the amount of friction over that distance.
If i did it again i would pre-load the conduit with the water pipe and lay it in one go.
If you use a conduit system it is then possible to pull a new pipe through if you ever need too.
Might be wrong but normally when they mole services they use the smallest pipe they can get away with (water 20mm,gas 16mm)
If you have the option to dig, might be worth finding a man with a digger, cost wise vs moling probably not a lot in it.

I replaced the mains water pipe at 2 of my houses. You need to comply with the water company by-laws. It will need a deep trench about 2'
6" deep to prevent freezing. At the point of entry to the house a 4" slow bend is required with the pipe inside lagged against frost. If
you call at your local plumbers merchant he should supply the bits and give advice on install. You need to get the utility company to switch over the
pipes.
