seen them many years ago, home build machines that can either fly by ground effect our just take wings off and be a standard hovercraft

It's an Ekranoplane, not a hovercraft.

This is the early Russian one, known as The Caspian Sea Monster as it appeared on a US spy photo and nobody knew what it was:





They use smaller, modern ones in Florida around the Keys.

There is a film around somewhere of this in flight and it is a beast

It does go ONLY 300mph so not as fast but should this idea not be considered further by Airbus \ Boeing. With modern engines and tech they could probably improve those states further.

the one at the top of the post is actually a hovercraft hence the skirt round the side, but the wings are removable so it can be two different types of vehicle. Its built from plans
