Note to Amazon and Play.com....if you want me to buy from you then make sure your websites are working
As it stands I'm looking down the barrel of Winchester high street on Saturday morning, not a pleasant prospect.

Your lucky if you still have a high street that has actual shops in it, mine is nothing but charity shops, bookmakers and payday loan / pawnbroker
type places, and the odd tea room.

I would really prefer to buy locally, if at all possible - I'm even prepared to pay a bit over on-line prices to local suppliers. However,
every time I go into my local town(s) either no-one has it in stock, or they're asking outrageous prices combined with dreadful service. I end
up buying on-line, as long as I'm not in a hurry.
I plan to have an interesting discussion on Monday - I'm after a Yamaha keyboard that costs £479 on-line, £499 in a local shop. I'm going
to go into the shop and explain the situation... I'll even offer to pay by whatever method suits them best, cheque, card, bank transfer or
folding money to see if that helps them to reduce the price. If they get close (i.e. half-way) to the on-line price I'll go with them - and buy
the stand for it at their price (but I won't tell them that before!).

The local shops round me usually cost a little more than online, but you do get free postage/next day to collect in store if it's not in stock,
a friendly chat and a lot of help (e.g. local bicycle shop giving loads of useful advice). They do actually pay some taxes, may explain the higher
cost.

I'd love to be able to pay slightly more to support local businesses. But most accessible town centres are full of chain shops that have online
presences anyway, so I see no point in supporting their shops.
Although Chichester town centre is a lovely place to shop, I was down there working for a few weeks and found it fascinating and delightful.

My post sounded more serious than I intended... it is still likely that I will buy from the local shop, but it doesn't hurt to ask for a
discount!
As for local shops - Ipswich and Colchester are both pretty dreadful places to find independent retailers. They've mostly been wiped out by cr@p
chains in out-of-town stores like B&Q. it's a sore point with me, but I won't dwell on this as I've said it all before here
(for example, B&Q always advertise how cheap they are - but little independent hardware shops in Hadleigh and the fringes of Ipswich still manage
to be significantly cheaper for many items). It's a classic case of 'bullsh*t baffles brains' as far as advertising is
concerned.
</end rant>

my local town used to have a lovely one way system you could get round in 5mins. then some twat at the council come along took a quarter of the
circle away built a bus station there and made the remainder of the system a two way road. about 6 months later they then went and blocked off all
the short cut side roads to make you go round their crap new design. it now takes 30mins to do what used to take 5. result we don't go there
any more and avoid going that direction at any cost.
the high street is on its ass and i keep ordering stuff off the internet as it pisses me off to go there.

That's a shame, I used to live in Ipswich around the turn of the millenium and I found it to be quite a pleasant shopping experience. I guess 13
years of progress hasn't been kind.

Until recently Ipswich had a road planning officer who didn't hold a driving licence... I think that says it all...
I used to park in the street just outside of the town centre, as I'm not averse to walking into town. When I'd finished shopping I had a
2 minute drive down slightly busy roads to get on the road out of town. Now, if I park in the same place, I have to turn the car around and go
through the busiest part of town - this can take up to 20 minutes of wasting petrol and just makes those busy roads even busier. In fact, just about
everyone is routed down that busy road from that side of town.
Like you - I just stay away, if at all possible.

I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

I've got to wait until the end of next year - they work it out as follows: based on my birthday, if I was a woman when would I get my pension...
that's the date I can apply for a bus pass.
Not a huge issue though, as don't often catch buses - only this time of year, when I use the local park-and-ride!
