garage upgrade
Hi all and hope your all enjoying this time of year.
Right i many have a few questions for the builders and advanced DIYers,
I currently have a garage at around 20m2 with a 10m2 workshop/shed to the rear and i would like to extend this. The reason besides me being greedy is
workshop is used as a shed and with the kit car in the garage i cant do much woodwork ect, the other reason is i have 1.2m space at the side before my
boundry fence which keeps falling down but has a big gate at the front (last owners greenhouse/wood shed) and did have a roof to the fence from the
garage. The nabours all say its ok mainly as they dont like the old rotten fence and they dont want to keep repairing it (or keep pestering me too)
and all say the garage needs a new look as only concrete blocks and all the houses have recently been done with pebble dash and render so was thinking
a brick front to match the bottom of the house and pebble dash the sided but my issue struck with the recent strong winds, the roof has not held up
well (letting alot of water in) and now theirs cracks too the back wall. What is my best option besides tearing it all down to help secure it. The
building is single course concrete blocks and if i extend one side how deep do i go with foundations plan is 300mm wide and guessing 400mm deep at
600mm (bottom of concrete) below ground with a brick course before ground level with evenly spaced concrete block pillars for added support. Any one
give advice as local builders are palming it off as i want to do alot of the work and they dont like the old concrete base at 300mm depth and olny
will help if i rip it all down and start again.
Also to add no trees and soil is good at 450mm not clay.

Advice would be yo talk to building control. It sounds like what you are proposing to do would need to meet building regs (and planning too given the
proximity to your neighbours boundary), so personally, i am oulf be seeing what my local building regs inspector has to say as he will be the one
signing any work off.
