They are very hard to get rid of nowadays, which is silly really.

Don't get me started.... We had an employee. Lost our company about £20k by ignoring HMRC letters. We organised a disciplinary hearing, upon which she developed "depression and anxiety". Apparently all caused by our unjust handling of the case. Which is strange because all we'd done really is notify her of the planned investigation (note investigation not disciplinary hearing). End result we ended up paying out another £6k to get rid of the waste of space after she'd gone off on full pay for a good few months. Now if I'd found out I'd spanked away £20k of my employers money I'd probably get a bit depressed and anxious but I wouldn't try and use it as a reason to screw yet more money out of them. Grrrrr.... Not having a pop at clinical depression- been there, got the black dog t-shirt, had the meds. Just hate it when people use it as an excuse for covering up for their f'ups.

Of course whenever a disciplinary hearing is held and it's about a woman it's sex discrimination (unlimited claim). Bunch of nutsack if you ask me. We had one claim of sex discrimination on the basis that she was a woman and therefore the main care giver. Isn't that slightly sexist attitude? Eh???? Somehow we were being sexist by not agreeing with her sexist attitude.... Still don't quite understand that one....

The whole thing is stupid.

And it just encourages companies to fire people before the 12 month timeframe so they can't go to an ET.....

Don't even get me started. We had some right muppets come through my place of work. Some people just think their owed money because they exist.

We employed a salesman once and he turned up in a nice new Jag, nice suit etc. Amazing CV. He wanted very high wages and we said sorry there is no way we can afford that. He said and I quote his exact words 'I am such a mover and a shaker, a legend in the field of sales that I am willing to work for half wages for 6 months, after 6 months and I have achieved X amount of new sales you WILL pay me my original wage request'.

We thought that sounded a great idea. He left in disgrace after 6 months with no sales.

Only two countries in the world have lower employment protection than the UK, Canada and America. However bad you think it is here, it's harder in most places.

When the Tories were thinking of cutting employment protection a couple of years ago (look up the Beecroft Report) the papers found that only 2 countries had less employment protection than the UK. Read into that what you will. A handful were only better on balance (worse in some ways better in others). The remainder had better or much better employment protection.

Think about why Ford and Vauxhall closed UK plants rather than German / Belgian / Spanish factories. It is much harder and more expensive to get rid of people elsewhere. IIRC you can make people redundant in Germany, but you have to pay their full salary and benefits for, I think, a year afterwards.

Oh I know you can get rid of them, its just the hassle of it. Most people don't admit their mistakes and go quietly, they play the system to try and get something by going for unfair dismissal or something similar which costs a lot of time and money to sort. By saying they are hard to get rid of, I suppose I meant hard to get rid of without a lot of hassle - BenB gave a good example of that.
