Which tablet?
Peeps,
We are thinking about getting a tablet, mainly for the yoofs to use for doing their school homework, but also for use by the rest of us should we so
desire (except me cos I like a big screen!)
So, the question to those in the know, what do you recommend (no Apple products please  ) - we quite like Samsung products but .....

Are kids still using the "it's for my school work" line? I remember using that to try and get a ZX Spectrum out of my parents

Through my work I have had quite a range of tablets from the andoid powered samsungs through the windows microsoft surface pro (bl00dy expensive) and
have now settled on an ipad pro. So impressed with the ipad over the others I switched my personal phone from android to apple.
not sure why you don’t like apple but the ipad knock spots of the competition as it is easy to use and just works.
If it ain't broken, fix it anyway (just because).

After various Android devices, Wife and I are settled on iPads and phones.
Dont touch Windoze anymore...

Just updated my Ipad (Apple decided to stop updating the operating system on older ipads and ipad minis!) to a Samsung Tab S2 with 9.7" screen.
Very pleased with it (lighter/thinner than the ipad, charges quicker, battery lasts longer) and it has a few good features, such as extending the
standard 32GB memory by up to 128GB using a micro SD card (rather than paying Apple through the nose for a larger memory ipad). It cost me £299 from
Samsung over the Black Friday weekend, not sure if that deal is still on. My wife got the 8" version (£230) and is very pleased with hers
too.

This one is very good value I have purchased 2 if you go for an android, argos on ebay take some beating for price these are new mine came fully boxed
and sealed.

I love my 8" Lenova Yoga tablet with the built in stand and thick round end with huge battery capacity. Had it for about 5 years now and never
given a moment's trouble - find the thickened end great for holding it firmly and comfortably - especially when reading in bed. If ever I have
to replace it I will definitely get another one.
My brother in law - an IT specialist agrees with me and now has two (a 5 year old one and a new one).

Our 3 kids (11, 9 & 9) have Kindle Fire tablets (7" IIRC). They work fine for surfing the web, but in practice the screen size is too small
for the My Maths homework websites. They all prefer to use the family schlaptop with a mouse for such things. It can cause a queue with those
waiting to get on it and does take some parental policing to ensure they do their homework and then vacate for the next one.
FYI - It's a cheapish (£230) HP Core i3 laptop and is more than quick enough for what they're doing.

Don’t rule out Apple, they are award winning devices for a reason. I tried to avoid but they really are an exellent product. Very intuitive to use.
Second to none in terms of quality and backup.battery life good on my current iPad Pro. Deals to be had £100 off my Pro. Can be bought with
educational discounts as well. Given up with Samsung especially the phones, short battery life and clunky crap GUI amongst other things.

I have an iPad 3 (bought by my employer) for work. It's a good bit of kit and works well. That said I'm not sure I'd shell out for
one myself.
Brother and sister in law have a Samsung tablet of the same age and size, but cheaper. It seems to work perfectly well to me. Not sure about battery
life though as I haven't lived with it.

Another vote for ipads.
I’ve just upgraded to an iPad Pro 12.9”
Expensive - but they just don’t go wrong.
I can almost dispense with the laptop with the Pro, I’ve bought a case with Bluetooth keyboard.
Just like using the laptop apart from not getting the ‘not responding’ messages that plague
The Windows operating systems.

The iPad is NOT good for multiple users - it is really designed as a single-user device. There is no way to have multiple user accounts - which is
what he said he needs it for - unless you keep signing in and out as a different user. And anyway, he has said no Apple.

Depends what you want to do with it. We have ipads and Android and they don't get used [especially ipads - complete waste of money]. My kids,
even the 10 yr old, are really into gaming and the only thing you can game on properly is a PC.

wether its pc or not, both my wife (an ex disgrunteled samsung owner) both are I pad/ I phone users, and doubt will change

Tablets (and phones) are sort of like marmite - you either have Apple or Android and I've rarely heard of people swapping either way.
Apple's are painfully expensive but supposedly more intuitive for non-techy users although, personally, I don't see this as I've
tried numerous Apple tablets and they're no more obvious to use than Android - for example, ask an Apple user about widgets (hint: Apple
don't do widgets).
The Apple retina display is excellent but battery life (possibly because of the demands of the display) is not as good as Androids (I'm told).
I'm writing this on my 2.5 year old Galaxy Tab Pro which I now have to charge every 2 days rather than every 3 days when I first got it.
I've had tablets for years, always Android and mostly Samsung. My wife and daughter have the Lenovo Yoga but I'm afraid they are not
liked; the built-in flap that acts as a stand is not big enough to support the screen and it falls over too easily. But the worst problem is that when
using a browser (and I've tried a few), you only ever get mobile websites. The tablet seems to have a hard-coded user agent string that I cannot
get round and mobile websites on a big screen are horrible. My wife is getting a new Samsung for Xmas...
Bottom line - Apple's are fine but, like a BMW, you're paying extra for the badge whereas the Skoda (Android) will do the job just as well
for less.

Apple most certainly does do widgets - there are plenty available for both iOS devices and Apple macs.

I'm an Android man personally, and always go for the Nexus branded stuff. Our 4ish year old Nexus 7 is still going strong
