Building a Locost without the Interweb.....
Anyone else remember doing this!? I was thinking about it today, I finished building my first one in 2000 and as I remember it was expensive - I
can't remember e-bay existing so you had to pay what suppliers wanted (mind you you could still walk into a proper scrap yard and walk out with
a pair of cortina uprights for bugger all money!) and frustrating as there wasn't anywhere like this where you could ask a question and be
almost guarenteed someone had been there, done that and was willing to tell you how much trouble it had got them into because......... well no one
realy had been there or done that for 50p yet!
Just starting on my third and have realised we don't know we're born nowadays
That new locost forum thing that some of us got spammed about with its pictures of 'uncle Ron' (completely without any health warning I
may add!) must have brought back more repressed bad memories than I thought

Yup, did first car without internet, you'll see some 'unique' solutions to problems on our cars!
Was inspired by having a go in Rob Lane's 1300 crossflow powered car! I think it was 2am when we left his house!
He showed us what could be done in 3 months, ours took 3 years
Second car, had internet, but knew what I wanted from the project, so it wasn't much use.

I have some ideas for things that would be frowned on as not being the done thing for mine. Mostly to do with saving money.
It's this sort of accepted norm that I see as the downside to the popularity of it all. It makes everything a wee bit predictable IMHO.
The whole bike engined car thing wouldn't have been as widespread without t'internet either I reckon.

thats a good point there john, theres lots of things we all take as gospel, just cos "that how it meant to be done", when often there are
plenty of other ways. When i make my new chassis (probably next winter now) im going to break the rules! Single shear suspension just because i
can! Seriously though, theres a lot of tradition/habit out there.

I think there are two ways to look at a possible lack of invention that occurs nowadays - one is that far fewer people would actualy get to finish
building a car without the help and advise they can get from going a well trodden route because, if I remember correctly, if you're on your own
in the garage it can be a soul sapping b'stard of a job figuring out everything on your own..... the other is you can get slightly bullied into
going in a direction on a build if you ask for opinions - bike engines are a classic for this don't get me wrong BEC are fabulous but you
don't have to have one!
Having said that the internet is still an amazing tool for finding out how to fit a RR Merlin engine in your car if thats what realy want and I wish
it had been around for build 1
