windows media player to ipod transfer?
The wifw's just bought an ipod mini and is now badgeriing me to fill it up with music.
I have several gigs of MP3s on my laptop, ripped using Windows Media Player. Can I simply put these tracks onto the ipod or do I have to install
itunes and convert to some other format for it to work?
I don't really want to clag up my hard drive with duplicate files just to get the poxy ipod working.

iPod mini can't play movies can it? I thought it was just the new G4 iPods that can.
The new normal iPod supports the following media support:
H.264 video: up to 768 Kbps, 320 x 240, 30 frames per sec., Baseline Profile up to Level 1.3 with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v,
.mp4 and .mov file formats
MPEG-4 video: up to 2.5 mbps, 480 x 480, 30 frames per sec., Simple Profile with AAC-LC up to 160 Kbps, 48 Khz, stereo audio in .m4v, .mp4 and .mov
file formats

Correct me if I'm wrong - but I think you just import the music into I-Tunes and transfer that way. It's APPLES own system :-(
However, you could try here for this software - looks good:
Software here - must be a torrent somewhere
I believe the IPOD works off an XML file or similar - to list the artist, track etc.. etc... hence it can't just drag and drop :-(
It's either I-Tunes or that software...
Sorry :-(

that's what I feared
Lovely looking bit of kit, but now I'm going to have to either f**k about with 2 lots of music on the computer or be forced to live with itunes
when I'm quite happy with Media Player.
I told her to wait for me to researc this before buying, but no...."I must have an ipod they're sooooo coool"

Sorry Nick, i'm being a plonker. Easiest thing is to either get iTunes (which is brill!!) or just plug the baby in with the usb lead and try.
if you want info on iTunes just ask as i love it to death!

I'm sure itunes is fine, it's just the hassle of changing or having 2 formats which narks me.
I'll make a start tonight and see if I can live with it

I use anapod to tranfer my mp3's to my ip
od. Simple to use and also cheap. The program is tied to the serial number of the ipod so you can install it on serveral pc's ie (at home and at
work)
If I am ripping cd's I just use itunes

Nick you dont have to have 2 copys of every song on your hardrive. Just import them into itunes as you would with media player, it just searched for
mp3s on your hardrive.
Saying this, if you ripped using windows media player they are most likely to me .wma files not mp3s. These wont play on your ipod as apple dont like
microsoft!

just been reading up on the Apple FAQs and realised itunes will search for exisitng mp3s.
All my cds have been ripped to mp3 using Media Player, so maybe it's not as bad as I thought.

Nope. The only time we use that cr@ppy program iTunes is when we need to get stuff on/off of the iPod. Rest of the time, it's Media Player or
MusicMatch (SWMBO's favourite)
S
PS I have an irrational hatred iTunes and it's feck @rsed way of doing things. Wish they still did the MusicMatch iPod plug-in like they did
when the device first launched.

Are you sure it hasnt ripped them to .wma files though?
There are plugins for iTunes to let you use other MP3 players with it, so there might be a plug in for media player so you can upload to an ipod.
