Both. She's lucky you found it, you're even luckier it didn't blow up when you were driving and cost you a whole engine.

the edges were rounded with the wear !
lucky it held on !

never had that before.
normal for then to go snap bang.

the noise was the loose bits catching the belt on the crank end !!
and the noise was around 4500 revs so the old dear must drive crazy !

Not quite as extreme but my 20V 4AGE jumped a couple of teeth due to the tensioner going slack just recently.

The self tensioner was between adjustmanet points and wasn't immediately obvious! First I thought the variator on the inlet cam wasn't advancing.

She was very lucky. Things like that dont happen to many people. If that was mine it would have gone bang big time.

My mates ex missus car was similar. It was making a funny noise (mondeo TD) we thought it was a broken valve bucket. Turned out to be a loose cambelt, when he took it apart there were 2 teeth missing and it was still running ok.

I had a cavalier 2.0 that had 5 teeth MISSING of the belt - Still running only found it after we advised cambelt replacement, after an hour and a half of deliberation she said ok do it. Then we found it.

Had a discovery that was still running after it had worn half way through the BACK of the belt.

Also had a twin cam seirra that wasn't running due to the top bolt coming out is hole in the long guide, falling down through the chain (un-damaged), bouncing along the sump (no damage to bottom end webs or journals. And finaly taking an extra timing register finger of the cps ring on the crank which confused and blew the ECU.

Beware of the Goldfish in the tulip mines. The ONLY defence against them is smoking peanut butter sandwiches.
